            NETHERLANDS VS AUSTRIA PREDICTION

A point should be enough for both sides to advance to the knockout stages, however we expect Netherlands’ superior talent to prevail and pick up three points. It will be a tight affair due to what is at stake, with the Dutch just edging it. Memphis Depay has yet to score in the tournament, but he will be hopeful of doing so in this game, against an Austria defence who has yet to keep a clean sheet. The forward has 45 goals in 92 international appearances, and will be looking to kick-start his campaign here.Austria’s 1-0 loss to France ended a 17-game scoring streak, but they should be confident in getting on the scoresheet against Netherlands. Christoph Baumgartner has scored six in his last seven games for his country, so look for him to be a main threat and get at least two shots on target – Netherlands 2-1 Austria

NETHERLANDS VS AUSTRIA: PREVIEW & PREDICTION

Netherlands take on Austria in the final game in Group D, with both sides having plenty to play for in terms of progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

            Date: 25/06/24

            Kick-off time: 13:00 EST

            Venue: Olympiastadion Berlin

A draw against France means that Netherlands have taken four points from six, and will still have an opportunity to finish top of the group if they win, depending on France’s result against Poland. To advance in second place a draw will be enough, with Austria trailing them by a point in third.Austria, in contrast, must win this game if they are to finish in the top two of the group. They narrowly lost 1-0 in their opener to France, but produced the perfect response by beating Poland 3-1 in game two. This has left them third in the group, and as it stands they are amongst the best third place teams, meaning they are likely to advance with a point. In three previous appearances at the Euros, Austria have only made it out of the group stages once, which was in 2020, when they were eliminated by eventual champions Italy in the round of 16.

Consequently, a draw being good enough for both teams could result in a cagey affair. Netherlands had kept four clean sheets in five prior to the tournament, and have conceded just once in two games since. Austria failed to score against France, wasting a golden opportunity to go ahead, before they scored three against Poland. RB Leipzig attacker Christoph Baumgartner scored in five consecutive games for his country heading into the competition, and opened his account against Poland. At the back, there are a number of Dutch forwards they will need to contain. Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo scored in the opener and he will once again support front man Memphis Depay. Wout Weghorst has made an impact off the bench, highlighting the strength manager Ronald Koeman has in reserve.

This will be the 20th meeting in history between these two sides. Neither side have been particularly superior, with Netherlands winning nine games to Austria’s six and four draws. However, recent history have showcased the Dutch’s dominance, as they are currently in the midst of a seven game winning streak against their opponents dating back to 1992. Austria’s last win against Netherlands was a 3-2 victory in an international friendly in 1990. The two teams were drawn against each other in the group stages of the last Euros, so they are familiar with each other in this setting. On this occasion, Netherlands won 2-0, with Depay and Denzel Dumfries on the scoresheet.

            NETHERLANDS FORM GUIDE

            Netherlands

In their last five games, Netherlands have won three, drawn one and lost one. Netherlands were in good form heading into the tournament, and have started their Euros campaign with a win and draw in their first two group stage games. The first came against Poland, in which they had to come from behind to secure all three points. Taking on a side who were missing striker Robert Lewandowski, they conceded after 16 minutes to Adam Buksa. However, they did not trail for long as Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo found the equaliser. The game looked to be heading for a draw, but the Dutch were rewarded for their dominance with a late Wout Weghorst winner.

Against France they were able to record a goalless draw, giving them the opportunity to win the group on the final matchday. Both teams had their chances, but neither were able to find the breakthrough. Xavi Simons had a goal ruled out in the second half for offside after a lengthy VAR review.

They came into the competition having won back-to-back games 4-0 in preparation. The first of these was against Canada. It was goalless at half-time, but Memphis Depay broke the deadlock shortly into the second half. The lead was quickly doubled by Jeremie Frimpong, before Weghorst and Virgil van Dijk added to the score. They were strong at the back, restricting Canada to just two shots on target. They repeated this scoreline against Iceland, again dominating throughout. Simons scored the first, and van Dijk netted his second in as many games to make it two. Donyell Malen and Weghorst were also on the scoresheet. The first game of this run was a 2-1 defeat to Germany. They took a very early lead through Joey Veerman, but were unable to hold on for long with Maximilian Mittelstadt scoring the equaliser. Niclas Fullkrug bagged a winner with five minutes to go.

            AUSTRIA FORM GUIDE

            Austria

In their last five games, Austria have won three, drawn one and lost one. They came into the tournament in excellent form, but suffered a defeat in their opening game, albeit a narrow one to one of the favourites France. They gave the former World Champions a tough battle, and ultimately fell to a 1-0 loss thanks to a Maximilian Wober own goal before half-time. They gave up multiple opportunities, particularly to Kylian Mbappe who surprisingly missed a one-on-one, but edged possession. They had a golden opportunity to take the lead prior to the opening goal, but failed to convert.

They were able to get back on track in the group with a 3-1 win against Poland. They took a very early lead through Gernot Trauner, but were pegged back on the half hour mark by Krzysztof Piatek. They restored their lead in the second half with goals from Christoph Baumgartner and Marko Arnautovic, who converted from the spot.

Heading into the tournament, Austria had won six in seven, with their final game in preparation being a 1-1 draw with Switzerland. They took an early lead through Baumgartner, but this was soon cancelled out by Silvan Widmer. This was how the scoreline remained, with limited chances for both teams, as they combined for five shots on target. This followed a pair of wins, firstly against Turkey, in which they crushed their opponents 6-1. They went ahead early, this time through Xaver Schlager. Hakan Calhanoglu equalised from the spot, but Austria responded with a Michael Gregoritsch hat-trick. Baumgartner and Maximilian Entrup completed the rout. They then beat Serbia 2-1, with Patrick Wimmer and Baumgartner netting before Strahinja Pavlovic pulled one back. Serbia rarely threatened, with their goal coming from their only shot on target.
