As hosts, Germany automatically qualified for the upcoming tournament, meaning that they have not played any competitive games since the 2022 World Cup, where they were eliminated in the group stages. They have played in 11 friendlies since, and have been far from convincing. Only three of these were wins, whilst they lost five.
France, in contrast, have enjoyed much greater form, as they finished top of their qualification group with 22 points from a possible 24. This included a massive 14-0 win over Gibraltar, which contributed towards the 29 goals they scored across the eight group games. They also played a pair of friendlies in September and October, beating Scotland 4-1, but losing to this weekend’s opponents Germany 2-1.
As expected, due to the array of attacking and defensive talent they possess, France are amongst the favourites to be triumphant at the Euros. During qualification, PSG forward Kylian Mbappe scored nine goals, which was the third most of all players. Olivier Giroud, the nation’s record goalscorer, will also be hoping to add to his 56 goals in this friendly. He should be confident in doing so, should he play, against a side who has not kept a clean sheet in 10 games.
Despite their defensive struggles, Germany have scored seven in their last three, three of those coming from Borussia Dortmund forward Niclas Fullkrug. He may be the side’s prime threat.
In the last five meetings between the pair, France have won two and lost one, which was the recent friendly. Les Bleus beat Germany in the last European Championships in 2021, winning 1-0 in the group stages. They were also in the same group for the UEFA Nations League in 2018, in which France won and drew.
