We look at numerous factors to build a list of strong, dependable hockey picks and predictions. We can’t make any guarantees—this is sports betting, after all—but we do a lot of research to make the most informed NHL picks that we possibly can. Here are just a few factors we take into account.
Hockey is a brutal sport, so player availability can be a crucial deciding factor in a given match. We check the rosters constantly, looking for changes that could impact a team’s chances. Because hockey is a relatively low-scoring game, even the slightest change can have a massive in-game result.
Looking at a team’s past performance—especially within the current season—can provide valuable insights. We look at team record, scoring data, and general coaching outlook as we’re crafting our list of best NHL picks and predictions.
How has a team done playing away from home? Is the team’s schedule full of grueling close-call matchups? We look at these types of things when analyzing the NHL to help us make our picks. Hockey requires a massive amount of athletic energy, and tapped-out players can struggle to make an impact on the ice.
We’ve got you covered. We recommend plenty of top-notch sports betting sites over at our NHL sportsbooks page. We only recommend the best of the best for your region or state.
From that page, you can explore the options, find a sportsbook that works for your preferences, and sign up. Be sure to look out for a welcome bonus offer before you palace your bet.
A moneyline bet is simple: you pick a team to win and place your wager on them. But because not every team is equally good, the odds can differ, thus changing your potential payout. Here’s an example:
In this matchup, the -260 means that the Blues are favored to win. If you placed a $260 bet, you’d win $100 if the bet hit. On the other hand, the Canadiens are expected to lose. So if you bet $100 on them to win and they did, you’d get maid out $220 plus your original wager.
Hockey is a volatile but low-scoring sport akin to soccer, so you’ll actually find a lot of pretty even moneyline bets available. If you place smart bets, you can make these wagers very lucrative.
Point spread bets even the odds out by giving phantom “points” to the underdog teams and taking them away from the favored team. In the NHL, point spreads are usually labeled puck line bets. Here’s a solid example:
As you can see, the odds are slightly closer than the moneyline bets we described above. This is because the Redwings are expected to lose, but the puck line gives them 1.5 points extra to even things out. If the final score was Redwings 2, Rangers 3, Detroit would cover the spread and that bet would win. If the Rangers scored 4 and the Redwings scored 2, though, the Rangers would cover and that side of the puck line would win.
Overall, spreads can be relatively risky in hockey because scoring is pretty rare. We’ll offer puck line NHL picks occasionally, though, so keep an eye out for what our experts think.
Futures bets have you wagering on events in the distant-ish future. The most common NHL futures bet you’ll find is a wager on a team to win the Stanley Cup. You’ll find others, such as season MVP, top regular-season goal scorer, and more are also common.
Futures bets come attached with high risk, because you’re trying to pick one winner out of a large pool of potential outcomes. They’re also high reward, in that a win would net you a pretty penny most of the time. Here’s a look at some Stanley Cup futures:
This list goes on to include every NHL team. But as you’ll see, the odds, even for the most favored team—the Colorado Avalanche—are pretty high.
Anything can happen in hockey, so a $100 bet on the Avalanche would net you $450 if they won the Cup. But because so many teams are involved and there’s still a healthy chunk of season left, these futures and inherently risky.
Over/under or totals are quite common in the betting world, and it’s no different when it comes to our NHL picks. Instead of betting on a winner, totals have you bet on the total number of points scored within a match. For example:
It’s very simple. If more than 6.5 goals are scored in the match, the over hits. If fewer than 6.5 goals are scored, the under hits.
We’ll offer our fair share of totals NHL picks and predictions on this page because they’re great when you don’t have a vested interest in one particular team, but still want to up your investment in the match.
The Stanley Cup is the NHL championship, played by the top two teams who earned their place in the Cup over the course of the regular season and the playoffs.
As you might expect, it’s a huge event for hockey fans. And we’ll offer picks all through the season as teams vie for a spot in the Stanley Cup. Plus, we'll give Stanley Cup picks and predictions once the event actually arrives, so you can place savvy bets on the matches.
Our team includes a squad of expert cappers and a house capper, so our NHL betting picks and predictions are informed by knowledgeable parties.
Each week, they’ll write NHL picks articles, and we’ll ladder down the findings to this page, so you have a hub for expert-curated NHL predictions to help you make solid bets.
