Both sides come into this game on the back of a Premier League defeat, though one is in a more desperate situation than the other. Following their late 1-0 defeat at home to Liverpool at the weekend, Nottingham Forest are in 17th place, just four points above Luton who occupy the final spot in the relegation zone. The Hatters also have a game in hand. Forest have won just once in seven league games, and they are in severe danger of a return to the Championship.
The Seagulls, in contrast, are still fighting for a European place. They currently sit ninth, and are just three points behind West Ham in seventh. A victory this weekend would ensure they remain firmly in the race, or even strengthen their position. Defeat would allow the sides below them to overtake and see them fall behind further.
Roberto De Zerbi is missing his top scorer Joao Pedro, but his side have spread the goals in his absence. Simon Adingra has six this season, whilst Facundo Buonanotte has got on the scoresheet in recent weeks. They have scored just once in the last three games, but will hope to regain their scoring form against a team who has conceded 49 goals this season. Forest will be relying on the likes of Taiwo Awoniyi and Anthony Elanga to provide an attacking spark.
This will be just the fourth meeting between the pair in the top flight. Following Forestβs promotion in 2022, they and Brighton have a win each, with the other game ending in a draw. In their previous five matchups in the Championship, Brighton won three and lost two. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in victory for the Seagulls at the City Ground. In the 3-2 result, Forest took the lead very early on through Elanga, but Evan Ferguson equalised before Pedro put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half-time. Pedro added a third, then Morgan Gibbs-White pulled back another from the spot.
