Sports Betting Kansas

Kansas recently legalized sports betting, but sportsbook platforms have yet to go live in the state. Governor Laura Kelly signed Kansas’s sports betting bill into law in May 2022.

Sports betting in Kansas is most likely to arrive before the end of the year, giving bettors in the state some time to bet on their favorite teams. The NFL season will be in full swing, so Kansas City Chiefs fans are in luck.

Once sportsbooks are live in Kansas, bettors will need to be 21 or older and located within the state. Three sportsbooks are near-certain to come to Kansas: PointsBet, FanDuel, and Bally Bet. Other likely contenders include DraftKings, Caesars, BetMGM, and more.

Bettors in Kansas will be able to wager on a variety of sports including professional and college teams.

KS Sports Betting Overview, Timeline, And Background

Kansas sports betting moved pretty quickly, all things considered. Senate Bill 84 (SB 84) passed the state House of Representatives in March 2022. The State Senate approved it about a month later in April. In May, Governor Laura Kelly signed the bill into law. The bill was then slated to take effect on July 1, 2022.

That all played out as planned, and the bill took effect July 1. Now, Kansas is in the throes of regulations and licensing. It’s just a matter of time until apps launch in the state. The Kansas Lottery is expected to put forth its sportsbook approval process on September 1. From there, all that remains is for the state to authorize apps to go live. Then the platform providers will push their apps live in Kansas.

All of this is shaping up to happen before the end of the year, so while Kansas bettors may miss a chunk of the football season, betting apps are likely to go live in the middle of the 2022-23 NFL season.

In short, Kansas sports betting is coming soon.

How To Bet On Sports In Kansas

Sports betting in Kansas isn’t live yet, but it’s on the way. The first step to get started, then, is to wait.

As soon as Kansas sportsbooks go live, you can sign up and start betting.

Step one is to choose your preferred sports betting app. Chances are many will be live on day one or very close to it. That means you’ll have your pick of the druthers, or you can sign up for multiple sportsbooks. Have your favorite picked out? Download the app from the iOS App Store or Google Play to get started. You can also visit the sportsbook’s desktop site if you prefer betting from a computer.

Note: if you're betting from a computer, be prepared to install a special geolocation plugin, which will be used to confirm you are within Kansas borders before you can place a bet.

Step two is to complete the registration process. The sportsbook will walk you through this. Be prepared to provide some personal details, including:

  • Name
  • Email
  • Phone Number
  • Home Address
  • Date of Birth
  • SSN
  • Government-issued photo ID

These details will be used to confirm your identity.

Step three is to make a deposit. Sportsbooks in Kansas will feature a variety of available payment methods. It’s safe to expect the following:

  • Credit/Debit Card
  • PayPal
  • ACH echeck
  • Online banking

Other methods may also be available, but that’s a typical slate.

Finally, it’s time to place a bet!

Placing Your Wager

If you want to place a moneyline bet, find the match or game you wish to wager on. Moneylines will be featured next to totals and point spreads. Select the line of your preferred team to add it to your betslip. Next, head to your betslip and type the amount you’d like to wager.l The sportsbook will tell you how much you can win if your bet hits.

From there, select “place bet.” The sportsbook will load for a second while things process, then confirm that your bet has been placed.

The process remains the same for other bet types, including point spreads, totals, and other bets such as props or parlays.

What Sports Teams Are There To Bet On In Kansas?

Kansas has numerous sports teams you will be able to bet on, including some high-performing professional and college teams.

NFL: Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have been a pretty dominant force in the NFL of late, so it’s natural that bettors in the state would prefer to bet on a strong home team. Good news, Chiefs bets will be on offer in spades once the Kansas sports betting scene goes live.

It’s looking likely that Kansas will launch in the midst of the NFL season for 2022-23, so bettors can expect a ton of wagers to be available when sportsbooks are live. Expect the usual bets: moneylines, point spreads, and totals. Plus many others such as game props and player props.

MLB: Kansas City Royals

Baseball’s 2022 season ends in October, so bettors might need to wait until spring 2023 to bet on the Royals. Still, bets on the team will be widely available at Kansas sportsbooks. Not a Royals fan? There’ll be plenty of bets available across the MLB.

NCAA Teams

Though Kansas doesn’t have a full spread of professional teams, the state has a wildly popular college sports scene. NCAA teams in Kansas include the Kansas State Wildcats, the University of Kansas Jayhawks, the Wichita State Shockers, and others.

Kansas doesn’t restrict betting on college sports like other states do. For that reason, Kansas bettors are likely to find a huge variety of wagers available on those sports in the state. Come the NCAAF season and March Madness, Kansas bettors will have plenty of betting fodder.

Sporting Kansas City

Looking to bet on Major League Soccer? Kansas sportsbooks will have you covered. You’ll be able to bet on various soccer teams, including the KC football club.

You might see sites offering online sports betting in Kansas even before the state authorizes apps to go live. Steer clear of such apps. There is a large offshore sports betting market that targets users in states without full-fledged sports betting.

You should definitely wait until Kansas sportsbooks go live with full approval from the state’s governing bodies. There are many reasons to do so.

Better Lines And Odds

At an offshore site, you’re virtually trapped. You’re subject to the lines and odds set by the sportsbooks, and you don’t have options to look around for better payouts.

The legal Kansas sports betting market will be highly competitive with numerous books live and competing for your business. This means they’ll try to beat each other in terms of the lines and odds on offer. If you, as a bettor, shop around for the best odds at different Kansas sportsbooks, you’re likely to find bets with lines that might offer you an advantage over what you’d find at other books.

Bonuses And Promotions

Gray market sportsbooks might have stray bonuses or offers, but they are nothing in comparison to the sweeping offers you’ll find at legal sportsbooks in Kansas when they launch.

Simply signing up for a legal sportsbook will give you an excellent welcome offer. Deposit match bonuses, risk-free first bets, and other offers are usually on the table, sometimes to the tune of more than $1,000.

In short, sportsbooks want your business, and they’ll give you a solid promotion to earn it.

On top of that, sportsbooks offer promos for existing players. Even after you get the initial welcome bonus, you’ll be treated to odds boats, parlay insurance, and other ongoing bonuses to keep your account going.

More Payment Options

Legal sportsbooks offer trustworthy payment options. Plus, they offer a variety of payment methods. Offshore sportsbooks usually have one or two lesser-known payment methods. To keep your money safe, you should stick with legal and regulated sportsbooks.

Customer Service

Have a problem or issue? Chances are customer service will be required at least once or twice during your sports betting experience. Legal sportsbooks have highly dedicated teams ready to respond to your questions and help resolve your issues. Plus, you can use various channels to get in touch, including email, live chat, and phone.

Offshore sportsbooks have customer service, sure, but it’s usually shoddy and unreliable. They might have limiting hours or long wait times. It’s in your best interest to use a legal sportsbook, because they prefer to resolve your issues quickly so you can get back to using the platform as intended.

Your Money & Data Are Safe

When you bet at a legal sportsbook, you are using a secure platform. Almost all sportsbooks use SSL encryption to protect your data. This means everything you send to the sportsbook—information, money, personal data, etc.—is encrypted on its way to the sportsbook’s systems.

In addition, your money is protected. Legal sportsbooks are required to pay out winnings by law. They can’t just shut down and take your money with them. Offshore sportsbooks, however, can do just that, putting your funds in a constant state of risk.

Mobile Sports Betting Apps Available In Kansas

You might be wondering: can I bet on sports using my mobile device in Kansas? The answer is a resounding yes, though you first need to wait for the sportsbooks to actually launch.

Not only that, but you can also bet using your computer as long as you install a geolocation plug-in first.

Mobile tends to dominate this market for all the reasons you might expect. It’s fast and convenient to bet on the go. You don’t need to download a separate app to confirm your location (the apps will usually use your phone’s GPS). You can bet live on a game that’s already in progress without being tied to a desktop device.

If you’re at a sports bar catching the game with friends, you can whip out your phone and easily place a bet. Mobile is an unparalleled convenience in terms of sports betting. Kansas bettors will certainly appreciate the ease of use mobile sports betting offers.
