• Ball State ML at -125

Ball State ranks 131st in total offense, Kent State ranks 132nd. But the Golden Flashes are scoring a little more (18.6 ppg) compared to the Cardinals at 16.4 ppg. Neither has a defense worth talking about; both give up 400+ yards a game.

How do you pick a winner between two really bad teams? Home-field advantage. Neither team has lost a game at home. Ball State is the home team; Kent State has been blown out in every home game this season.

• Dre DeShields, UNDER 184.5 Passing Yards at -115

DeShields has gone OVER this TOTAL just once this season. I wouldn’t call Ball State’s pass defense good (82nd in the country, 229.6 yards per game allowed). But DeShields averages less than 160 yards per game and has gone for more than that just once.

The Cardinals' defense will be good enough.

• Kial Kelly, UNDER 1.5 Touchdown Passes at -245

Kelly has only six passing touchdowns on the season and has had more than one in just a single game. It would be surprising if he were to throw two in this game.

A bad passing game, like Ball State’s, will not necessarily play better against a bad pass defense (i.e., Kent State). Kelly has gone OVER this mark in two of eight games; don’t count on him to go OVER here.

• Chip Trayanum, Anytime First Half Touchdown or First Toledo TD +110/+180

He scored in six of the seven games he has played in, scoring in the first half in all six and scoring first for the Rockets in five of those six.

Best Bets (Straight Picks)

• Kent State-Ball State, UNDER 46.5 at -110

These two teams combined score 35 points per game on average. In this game, these teams are facing defenses that allow 29.8 and 36.5 points per game. Take the UNDER.

• Toledo -14.5 at -110 (vs. Northern Illinois)

Toledo has been playing lights out at home, scoring 45, 60, 45, and 45 points while giving up a total of 34 points on defense. Northern Illinois has a solid run game, but the Rockets have one of the best defenses in the nation (No. 3 in total yards). Toledo should cover.

There is an added challenge to betting on games between two bad teams. Will one be able to take advantage of the other’s shortcomings? I lean towards ‘No’ as the answer there. A bad team is not going to look good because it’s playing a worse team.

Since these games are not going to be on the radar of too many people, you can find value in many markets if you do your homework (i.e., Chip Trayanum’s touchdown props).
