It’s the start of a new season, and the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles begin seeking a return to the Super Bowl with a spotlight matchup against NFC East rivals the Dallas Cowboys in the 2025 NFL season opener.
It’s been a week of drama for the Cowboys, as their best player, defensive end Micah Parsons, was traded to the Green Bay Packers amid an acrimonious contract dispute. One of the best players in the NFL, Parsons will be impossible to replace, and that makes the -7 spread for the Eagles a tempting target.
But other Cowboys may emerge on defense, notably two-time All-Pro defensive tackle Kenny Clark, and the team also has top quarterback Dak Prescott back after an injury-shortened 2024 season.
No team has won consecutive divisional titles since 2001 to 2004, when the Eagles and Donovan McNabb won four straight. But the Eagles return 2,000-yard running back Saquon Barkley, so it’s hard to argue against a repeat barring a major letdown. Look at history: the NFL’s defending champions are 8-2 in their first game following a Super Bowl win, and the Eagles are tough at home, sporting an 8-1 slate last season.
While every team wants a great start to their season, the Eagles are especially geared up to win, since they face away games at the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, both playoff teams in 2024, sandwiched around a home game against the Los Angeles Rams, also a playoff squad.
The Cowboys have it relatively easier, with a home game next against the New York Giants and an away game against the Chicago Bears. That’s before a big primetime showdown against the Green Bay Packers and Micah Parsons to close out September.
