Following the conclusion of the 2021 season, in which the Buccaneers were eliminated in the Divisional Round by eventual Super Bowl LVI Champs Los Angeles Rams, Brady announced his retirement on February 1, 2022 after 22 years in the NFL. The desire to spend more time with his wife and children was a major factor in his decision. However, life after football lasted just 40 days, as Brady then shocked the world by announcing his plans to return for another season with the Bucs. After convincing conversations with the organisation, as well as having the support of his family, the superstar felt he still had more to give, with the belief that he could secure a record eighth Super Bowl title. In doing so, he became the oldest player to ever start an NFL game at quarterback, aged 45.
Despite suffering his first losing season as a starter, the Bucs and Brady’s 8-9 record was enough to win them the NFC South division, and therefore clinching their place in the postseason. However, they bowed out in the divisional round after a 31-14 loss at home to the Dallas Cowboys.
This became Brady’s official last game, as just over two weeks later he announced he was retiring again, this time ‘for good’, a statement which still remains true.
