NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award

Today we look at the favorites and a few dark horses for this year’s NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award. It’s given to the NFL’s best rookie on the offensive side of the ball. What makes a rookie the best is quite subjective, so this award can be a tough nut to crack. But the long odds throughout the field make it that much more rewarding if predicted correctly.

Let’s get into it.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: The Favorites

Kenny Pickett (QB) +875

+1600 as of 10/21/22

In college, Kenny Pickett led the Pittsburgh Panthers to an 11-2 record in 13 games as well as an ACC Championship win. The new Steelers rookie QB was drafted 20th in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft from Pitt - Pittsburgh through and through.

Prior to the start of the 2022 NFL season Pickett was the heavy favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. One day before the 2022 NFL Kickoff Mitch Trubisky was named the Steelers’ starting quarterback in a surprising decision by the team’s front office. While the decision hasn’t been set in stone for the entire season - and Kenny Pickett can still win the starting position back - it has pushed the rookie signal-caller’s chances to win Offensive Rookie of the Year to a very close favorite.

George Pickens (WR) +900

+2000 as of 10/21/22

Another rookie for the Steelers, George Pickens was drafted in the second round from the Georgia Bulldogs. Pickens had a great showing in the preseason alongside fellow Steelers rookie Kenny Pickett. For now it seems that George Pickens will be receiving passes from Mitch Trubisky, though that could change. I expect the new Steelers WR to put up some Offensive Rookie of the year-worthy numbers this season along with some amazing catches (He’s got sticky hands).

Chris Olave (WR) +1000

+900 as of 10/21/22

Drafted from Ohio State by the New Orleans Saints with the 11th overall pick, wideout Chris Olave is expected to have high production this season. At Ohio State Olave recorded 12 receiving touchdowns against single coverage - the most among all college football wide receivers. The rookie is an elite route-runner and should pair nicely with Saints’ QB Jameis Winston. Look for plenty of big catches from Chris Olave this season.

Offensive Rookie of the Year: The Dark Horses

Dameon Pierce (RB) +1100

+500 as of 10/21/22

Dameon Pierce was drafted with the 107th pick by the Houston Texans. At the start of Summer, Pierce was a longshot for the award at +4000 odds. A couple months and a few preseason showings later (averaging nearly 8 yards per carry), Pierce has now joined the favorites for the Offensive Rookie of the Year award. While the Houston Texans are expected to have a lackluster season, Dameon Pierce has shown his ability to be the new focal point of their offense. One can expect the first-year Texans RB to put up great rookie numbers this year.

Romeo Doubs (WR) +1250

+1400 as of 10/21/22

Green Bay rookie Romeo Doubs has seen his odds drop from all the way from +50,000 to his current +1250 since he was drafted from Nevada. He was heavily targeted in the preseason (roughly 40% of routes). Green Bay has been in need of receiving talent and it looks like the Packer’s like Doubs at the starting slot.
