Following their 2-0 victory over Koln last weekend, Bayer Leverkusen extended their lead at the top of the table to 10 points. This is because they were able to take advantage of more dropped points by Bayern Munich. Xabi Alonsoβs team are still yet to taste defeat this season, with 10 more games to go in their bid to win not only a first title, but to do so without being beaten.
Wolfsburg, in contrast, are enduring a very underwhelming campaign, sitting in 13th just eight points above the bottom three. They have not won a game in the league since mid-December, in what has been a dismal run of form. It does not get any tougher than Leverkusen away, so it would be a shock to see this winless streak end.
However, despite the lack of wins, Niko Kovacβs side have scored at least two goals in three of the last five games, though this Leverkusen defence have conceded just twice in the last six. Jonas Wind is their top scorer with nine, but he has not scored since November. Lovro Majer is second with four. Victor Boniface is still Leverkusenβs leading scorer with 10, even though he has been out for a while. Alex Grimaldo and Jeremie Frimpong have also stepped up, with 15 goals between them. Grimaldo has also contributed 10 assists, the second most in the division.
Since 2020, the two sides have faced off eight times in the Bundesliga. There has not been much to split the pair, Wolfsburg slightly edging it with three wins. Leverkusen have won twice, with the rest ending in draws. However, Wolfsburg are winless in five, their last victory coming in 2021. They won 2-0 thanks to quick-fire goals from Max Arnold and Lukas Nmecha. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in a 2-1 win for Alonsoβs side. Frimpong opened the scoring early on, but they were pegged back by Maxence Lacroix. Grimaldo bagged the winner.
