It is looking increasingly likely that the Bundesliga title winner will be neither Bayern Munich nor Borussia Dortmund for the first time since 2009. Bayern are currently second, but are 10 points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen who are yet to lose this season. With eight games remaining, it is not over, but they will have to be almost perfect and rely on others if they are to topple Xabi Alonso’s side. This means that three points will be crucial this weekend, to allow them to potentially capitalise on any dropped points. Defeat could open the door for Stuttgart to move just one point behind them.

Dortmund, in contrast, are fourth, 10 points behind Bayern. If they are to cement their place in the top four, three points will also be vital for them. RB Leipzig are just a point and a position below and will be more than ready to overtake if the opportunity arises. A win would allow them to look forward, and possibly catch Stuttgart in third.

Both teams are very talented in the attacking areas. The hosts have scored 13 in their last two and are led by Harry Kane’s 31 goals. Thomas Tuchel will be hoping his ankle injury is not serious enough to rule him out, as he would be confident in adding to this tally against a side who have kept just one clean sheet in their last five. Bayern also have suffered from inconsistency at the back, they have not shut out a team in the league since the end of January. Niclas Fullkrug and Donyell Malen could provide the biggest threat, as they have scored 22 goals between them so far.

This matchup has been dominated by Bayern in recent years, as they have won four of the last five meetings. The reverse fixture earlier this season was a 4-0 rout. Kane scored a hat-trick following Dayot Upamecano’s opener.

Form Guide

Bayern Munich Form Guide

In their last five games, Bayern Munich have won four and drawn one. After a dip in form, Bayern have recovered to go unbeaten in this stretch, recording some big scorelines. The most recent one was a 5-2 win at bottom side Darmstadt. The hosts stunned the German champions when they went a goal ahead before the half hour mark. However, Thomas Tuchel’s side quickly got back on track through a Jamal Musiala equaliser. Harry Kane scored his 31st goal of the season to put them in front on the stroke of half time, before Serge Gnabry and Mathys Tel added to the lead, whilst Musiala completed his brace.
This followed an even larger victory at home to Mainz, as they won 8-1. Bayern had a comfortable 3-1 lead at half-time which they kept adding to in the second half. Kane netted a hat-trick, with Leon Goretzka (x2), Thomas Muller, Musiala and Gnabry also getting themselves on the scoresheet in the rout.
A return to Champions League action saw them take on Lazio in the second leg of their Last 16 tie. The Italian side held a 1-0 lead from the first leg, and the Germans were under immense pressure to overcome the deficit at home. It was a tense affair to start, but a Kane goal on 39 minutes eased the tension as he levelled the tie on aggregate. Muller netted in first half stoppage time to get them in at the break ahead. Kane added another to put the game to bed at 3-0.
The only dropped points of this run came away at Freiburg. It was a back and forth game in which both sides held an advantage. First it was the hosts, who went ahead thanks to a Christian Gunter goal. Tel equalised before half-time, and Musiala put them 2-1 up with 15 to go. Seemingly on their way to victory, Bayern could not hold on as they squandered their lead late on. A 2-1 home victory against RB Leipzig opened up this stretch, and they produced a late goal of their own to take maximum points. Unsurprisingly, it was Kane who scored a double, including one in stoppage time, either side of a Benjamin Sesko leveller.

Borussia Dortmund Form Guide

In their last five games, Borussia Dortmund have won four and lost one. The one loss came at the beginning of this run, as they fell 3-2 at home to Hoffenheim. They went 1-0 down after two minutes, but came back to take the lead before half-time with goals from Donyell Malen and Nico Schlotterbeck. However, two goals in three second half minutes sent Hoffenheim home with three points.
Four wins in a row followed, beginning with a 2-0 victory at Union Berlin. Dortmund dominated, and were rewarded with goals from Karim Adeyemi and Ian Maatsen in either half. They continued the streak with another away win at Werder Bremen. Malen put them in front, before Jadon Sancho doubled the lead. Marcel Sabitzer was shown red on the stroke of half time, but the hosts could not use the extra man to their advantage, only able to pull one back in the second half, as the game ended 2-1.
The next triumph came in the Champions League, as they progressed to the quarter-finals. After drawing the first leg 1-1, Dortmund came out on top 2-0 to win the tie 3-1. The goals came early and late, with Sancho scoring in the third minute and Marco Reus in the 95th. Their most recent outing was a 3-1 result at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Mario Gotze put the visitors in front, but Adeyemi cancelled this opener out before half-time. The winner came late in the 81st minute through Mats Hummels, before Emre Can added an insurance from the spot in stoppage time.

FlashPicks Prediction

Both teams are in great form heading into this one. After a brief downturn in form, Bayern are back on track and are scoring goals for fun. Dortmund are also looking hard to beat, so this one will be a closely fought game. However, the attacking threat of Bayern, coupled with home advantage, means we expect them to edge it – Bayern Munich 3-2 Borussia Dortmund.
