Anyone who pegged Austria as a dark horse in this tournament have been fully vindicated so far as the side have thoroughly impressed. Drawn into what many could argue was a group of death alongside France and Netherlands, they managed to top the group with two wins. They showed glimpses of their quality in their opening game against France, which they narrowly lost 1-0 to an own goal. They recovered well to beat Poland 3-1 and then Netherlands 3-2 to secure top spot.

Turkey also enjoyed a strong group stages, picking up two wins, eventually finishing behind Portugal. They opened up their campaign with a 3-1 win against Georgia before responding to a 3-0 loss to Portugal with a last minute 2-1 victory over Czech Republic. This is the country’s sixth appearance at the Euros, and third time they will have made it past the group stages. Their best finish was a semi-final in 2008, when they lost 3-2 to Germany. Austria are at the Euros for a fourth time and they have already matched their best finish of the Round of 16, which they achieved in the last tournament.

Both teams will be confident in getting on the scoresheet, having had success in front of goal so far. After being shutout against France, Austria have scored three times in back-to-back games, whilst Turkey have netted five. Defensively, the pair have also shown weaknesses, with neither yet to keep a clean sheet. For Austria, they will likely lean on the scoring output of Christoph Baumgartner, who has scored six goals in his last eight international appearances.

For Turkey, their main man is Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, though youngster Arda Guler has also excited fans, especially after scoring a stunning goal against Georgia. Heading into the tournament, Austria had won six in seven, with their final game in preparation being a 1-1 draw with Switzerland. Their preparations for the tournament ended with a 2-1 loss to Poland in their final friendly game before the tournament. The defeat came in dramatic fashion as they conceded at the death. Poland went ahead after 12 minutes through Karol Swiderski, but Turkey found an equaliser in the final 15 minutes thanks to Baris Alper Yilmaz. However, Nicola Zalewski’s 90th minute strike secured a win for the hosts. Prior to this, they were involved in a 0-0 draw with current European champions Italy. There were limited opportunities for both sides, with each only managing four shots on target between them.
