          FlashPicks Austria vs Turkey Prediction

Austria have been the surprise package so far at the tournament, and we expect them to continue their Euros journey into the quarter-final. Though, they will face a tough test in Turkey with goals likely at both ends. Neither team kept a clean sheet in the three group stage games and we back this to continue here.

Both have plenty of attacking talent, with Christoph Baumgartner and Marcel Sabitzer standing out for Austria. The pair have both found the back of the net, and the former is in a rich vein of form, scoring in six of his last eight international appearances. Arda Guler will be the main man for Turkey, especially in the absence of the suspended Hakan Calhanoglu. Guler has registered at least one shot on target in four of his last five games, and this trend is likely to continue. It should be an entertaining game but we back Austria to just edge it and advance – Austria 2-1 Turkey

Austria vs Turkey: Preview & Prediction

One of the surprises of the tournament, Austria, take on Turkey in the knockout stages of the Euros, with a place in the quarter-final of the competition at stake.

          • Date: 07/02/24
          • Kick-off time: 15:00 (ET)
          • Venue: Red Bull Arena Leipzig

Anyone who pegged Austria as a dark horse in this tournament have been fully vindicated so far as the side have thoroughly impressed. Drawn into what many could argue was a group of death alongside France and Netherlands, they managed to top the group with two wins. They showed glimpses of their quality in their opening game against France, which they narrowly lost 1-0 to an own goal. They recovered well to beat Poland 3-1 and then Netherlands 3-2 to secure top spot.

Turkey also enjoyed a strong group stages, picking up two wins, eventually finishing behind Portugal. They opened up their campaign with a 3-1 win against Georgia before responding to a 3-0 loss to Portugal with a last minute 2-1 victory over Czech Republic. This is the country’s sixth appearance at the Euros, and third time they will have made it past the group stages. Their best finish was a semi-final in 2008, when they lost 3-2 to Germany. Austria are at the Euros for a fourth time and they have already matched their best finish of the Round of 16, which they achieved in the last tournament.

Both teams will be confident in getting on the scoresheet, having had success in front of goal so far. After being shutout against France, Austria have scored three times in back-to-back games, whilst Turkey have netted five. Defensively, the pair have also shown weaknesses, with neither yet to keep a clean sheet. For Austria, they will likely lean on the scoring output of Christoph Baumgartner, who has scored six goals in his last eight international appearances.

For Turkey, their main man is Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, though youngster Arda Guler has also excited fans, especially after scoring a stunning goal against Georgia. Calhanoglu will miss the game through suspension, which is a bitter blow for Turkey, so expect a lot of their attacking threat to come from Guler.

This will be the 18th meeting between these two sides. There has not been much to split the pair historically, though Austria edge the head-to-head with nine wins to Turkey’s seven. They have yet to face off at a major tournament, though have met numerous times in qualifying fixtures. In the last three games, Austria have won two and lost one, with the most recent international friendly taking place just three months ago in late March. Austria were resounding 6-1 winners as they played in preparation for this tournament. On that day, Michael Gregoritsch scored a hat-trick, adding to further goals from Xaver Schlager, Baumgartner and Maximilian Entrup.

Patrick Wimmer will miss this game through suspension after picking up a yellow card in the last match. Aside from this, Austria should not have any other absentees.

          Turkey Team News

Turkey will be without key man Hakan Calhanoglu as he misses out through suspension. As a result, Arda Guler promises to play an increased role in the attack. Goalkeeper Mert Gunok returned from injury in the last game and will start once more. Abdulkerim Bardakci is available to return from suspension.

          Austria Form Guide

In their last five games, Austria have won three, drawn one and lost one. They came into the tournament in excellent form, but suffered a defeat in their opening game, albeit a narrow one to one of the favourites France. They gave the former World Champions a tough battle, and ultimately fell to a 1-0 loss thanks to a Maximilian Wober own goal before half-time. They had a golden opportunity to take the lead prior to the opening goal, but failed to convert.

They were able to get back on track with a 3-1 win against Poland. They took a very early lead through Gernot Trauner, but were pegged back on the half hour mark by Krzysztof Piatek. They restored their lead in the second half with goals from Christoph Baumgartner and Marko Arnautovic, who converted from the spot. Their last game was a 3-2 win against Netherlands, which ensured an unlikely top place finish in the group. They led three times, with goals from Romano Schmid and Marcel Sabitzer adding to an early Donyell Malen own goal to get the job done.

Heading into the tournament, Austria had won six in seven, with their final game in preparation being a 1-1 draw with Switzerland. They took an early lead through Baumgartner, but this was soon cancelled out by Silvan Widmer. The first of this run was a 2-1 victory over Serbia, with Patrick Wimmer and Baumgartner netting before Strahinja Pavlovic pulled one back.

          Turkey Form Guide

In their last five games, Turkey have won two, lost two and drawn one. It had been a terrible run for Turkey heading into the European Championships, but they made the perfect start with a win against Georgia in their opening game. They scored two stunning goals through Mert Muldur and Arda Guler, either side of a Georges Mikautadze equaliser. Muhammed Kerem Akturkoglu scored deep into stoppage time to secure a 3-1 win.

Turkey suffered a setback as they lost 3-0 to Portugal in the second game. Bernardo Silva opened the scoring, before a calamitous own goal from defender Samet Akaydin provided some daylight for their opponents. Bruno Fernandes added a third in the second half. They secured a second place finish with a 2-1 win over Czechia in the final game. A 20th minute red card for Czechia put them at an early disadvantage, and Turkey eventually took the lead shortly after the restart through Hakan Calhanoglu. However, they were pegged back soon after, before a 94th minute winner from Cenk Tosun stole three points at the death.

Their preparations for the tournament ended with a 2-1 loss to Poland in their final friendly game before the tournament. The defeat came in dramatic fashion as they conceded at the death. Poland went ahead after 12 minutes through Karol Swiderski, but Turkey found an equaliser in the final 15 minutes thanks to Baris Alper Yilmaz. However, Nicola Zalewski’s 90th minute strike secured a win for the hosts. Prior to this, they were involved in a 0-0 draw with current European champions Italy. There were limited opportunities for both sides, with each only managing four shots on target between them.
