Mexico and Brazil travel to the USA for one final friendly before they both compete in the Copa America this summer looking for silverware.
Date: 6/9/24
Kick-off time: 5:30pm Pacific Time
Venue: Kyle Field
This friendly will provide both managers the opportunity to take a last look at their squads before the tournament begins. Equally, players will be hoping to impress and push for positions in the team. Mexico have never won the Copa America, though they have finished as runners-up on two occasions, firstly in 1993 and again in 2001. A win against Brazil would give them a second consecutive win and some much-needed momentum heading into their first group game against Jamaica. They will feel good about advancing from a group which also contains Venezuela and Ecuador.
Brazil have plenty of talent in their team, but there are some question marks surrounding the team, and they come into this tournament in mixed form having won just one of their last six games, so they will be desperate to pick up another against Mexico. They will be hoping to win their 10th Copa America final, and go one step further than they did last time after they were defeated 1-0 in the final by Argentina.
Despite the number of quality attacking threats Brazil possess, they have been mostly inconsistent in front of goal in recent months. Their last game saw them score three in a 3-3 draw against Spain, but they only scored two in the four games prior. Their most dangerous outlet is likely to be Vinicius Jr, with his Real Madrid teammate Rodrygo providing support. For their club, the pair have combined for 36 goals in all competitions. However, they will look to end their preparations on a high, and they will be confident in putting in a good performance against a Mexico side recently disappointed by a Nations League final loss.
These two countries have met 41 times in the past. Brazil, as expected, have been the superior side, winning 24 to Mexicoβs 10. They are currently in the midst of a four-game unbeaten streak against their opponents with Mexicoβs last victory coming in an international friendly in 2012. The last game between the pair came in the 2018 World Cup Round of 16. Brazil were 2-0 winners with Neymar and Roberto Firmino the second half goalscorers.
