Brazil Seeks Improvement After Mixed Results

Brazil, a five-time Copa America champion, comes into this match with something to prove. They've had some recent struggles, winning only two of their last seven games. A victory against the USMNT would be a confidence booster heading into the tournament.

In their last five games, Brazil have won two, lost two and drawn one. It has been a mixed run of form for Brazil as they look ahead to the Copa America. This stretch began with two consecutive defeats, the first of which being a 2-1 loss at Colombia. Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli gave them an early fourth minute lead, but Luis Diaz of Liverpool scored two in four second half minutes to flip the game on its head. The hosts had 10 shots on target as the Brazilians struggled at the back.

Their second loss in a row came against rivals Argentina as they were defeated 1-0. There was not much to split the two teams, but Nicolas Otamendi’s 63rd minute goal proved the difference. Joelinton saw red late for Brazil. They responded well with a 1-0 victory against England at Wembley. Seventeen-year old Endrick stole the headlines as he scored his first goal for the country in the win.

They then played in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Spain. Rodri put their opponents ahead from the penalty spot, and Dani Olmo doubled their advantage. Rodrygo pulled one back before the break. The equaliser came shortly after the restart through Endrick. Spain thought they snatched victory with another Rodri spot kick, but Lucas Paqueta converted a penalty deep into stoppage time. Their most recent game was a friendly with Mexico, in which they won 3-2, with goals from Andreas Pereira, Martinelli and a 96th minute winner by Endrick.

USA Recent Form

In their last five games, USA have won two and lost three. It has been an inconsistent stretch for USA, despite them winning the CONCACAF Nations League final. They did so by beating Mexico 2-0 in the final. It was a tight game in terms of possession, but USA were able to break the deadlock on the stroke of half-time through Tyler Adams. Giovanni Reyna doubled their lead midway through the second half to win the trophy.

They made it to the final with a 4-2 aggregate victory against Trinidad & Tobago over two legs in the quarter-final, before beating Jamaica in the semis. After winning the first leg 3-0, they were in a strong position heading into the second. However, the second leg ended in a 2-1 defeat, though they took the lead. Sergino Dest saw red, which allowed Trindad to turn it around but it was not enough to threaten a comeback in the tie.

This set up a one-legged semi-final tie with Jamaica. They were 3-1 winners, but did so in dramatic fashion. Greg Leigh gave Jamaica a first minute lead, a lead they held until deep in second half stoppage time. USA equalised right at the death through an own goal, before taking the game away in extra-time with a Haji Wright brace. Between the quarter-final and semi-final, USA played in a friendly against Slovenia, in which they lost 1-0 at home. Nejc Gradisar scored the winner in the first half. Their most recent game was a friendly against Colombia, in which they lost 5-1. They fell 2-0 behind to goals from Jhon Arias and Rafael Santos Borre Maury, before Timothy Weah pulled one back. Colombia took the game away with three late goals from Richard Rios, Jorge Carrascal and Luis Sinisterra.
