This weekend’s La Liga fixture sees table toppers Real Madrid face Sevilla in what could be a very important game in the race for the title. Carlo Ancelotti’s men disappointedly dropped points away at Rayo Vallecano, which may allow second-place Girona to close the gap between the pair.

Their title challengers play on Monday night, and have a great opportunity to cut the deficit to just three points with a win over Athletic Bilbao. It would set up a tense finish to the season with 13 games to go. Sevilla have struggled mightily this season with 24 points from 25 games. This leaves them in 15th place, seven points above the bottom three. It would have to take an even more drastic downturn in form to see them dragged into a relegation battle, and their recent results have suggested they are moving in the right direction. They are unbeaten in four games, which includes a victory over Atletico Madrid. However, they face the trickiest test of all to keep this streak alive.

The hosts boast the league’s best defence, so Sevilla will find it tough to get past them. They have found goals hard to come by this season, with their top scorer being Youssef En-Nesyri with seven goals. After him, only two other players have scored more than twice. They also struggle defensively, conceding 37 goals so far. They won’t have to deal with Jude Bellingham, who is injured, but they will have to keep an eye out for a number of attacking threats such as Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Joselu.

Games between these two sides are always competitive, especially in recent seasons. In the last six meetings, both teams have scored at least one goal. There have been 21 total goals in these games. Four of these ended in Real Madrid’s favour, with the remaining two resulting in draws. Sevilla have not got the better of their opponents since 2018, when they won 3-0.

There was nothing to split the two sides in the reverse fixture earlier this season, as the points were shared in a 1-1 draw. The game was goalless for the majority of the game, but the deadlock was broken in the 74th minute as David Alaba put the ball in his own net to give the hosts the lead. This did not last long though, with Dani Carvajal soon putting his side back on level terms. Neither team could find the winner.

Real Madrid Team News

Jude Bellingham remains out with an ankle injury. He is expected to miss a few games. Antonio Rudiger may make a return after being sidelined with a thigh injury. Thibaut Courtois and David Alaba are out for the season, whilst Eder Militao could be back sometime in March. Ferland Mendy returns from suspension.

Sevilla Team News

Mariano is a doubt for this game. Marcao, Tanguy Nianzou, Nemanja Gudelj and Lucien Agoume are all slated to return towards the end of this month, so their availability is in question.

Form Guide (Last Five Games)

Real Madrid Form Guide:

In their last five games, Real Madrid have won three and drawn two. Their most recent game saw them draw 1-1 away at Rayo Vallecano, which has opened the door for Girona below them. They took the lead through Joselu in the third minute, but were pegged back before half time by a Raul de Tomas penalty. Despite having a good share of the possession, they were unable to find a winner as Dani Carvajal saw red in second-half stoppage time.

The European giants returned to Champions League action with a 1-0 win at RB Leipzig in the first leg of the last 16. They were lucky to not go a goal behind early on, but Brahim Diaz struck shortly after the break to give his side a lead heading into the second leg. In what was a huge top-of-the-table clash with Girona, Madrid crushed their title rivals 4-0 at the Bernabeu. Vinicius Jr opened the scoring six minutes in before Jude Bellingham added a brace. Rodrygo scored a fourth to finish the rout.

A meeting with city rivals Atletico ended in a draw as Marcos Llorente netted a 93rd-minute leveller to condemn Real to disappointment. Diaz had put them ahead in the first half. This followed a 2-0 win at Getafe in which Joselu scored a goal either side of half time.

Sevilla Form Guide:

In their last five games, Sevilla have won two, drawn two and lost one. The one defeat came at the beginning of this stretch of games, in the Copa Del Rey quarter-finals. They came up against Atletico Madrid and were defeated 1-0 as Memphis Depay scored the winner late on. They then proceeded to pick up eight points from a possible 12, marking a significant improvement in their league form.

It started with a point against Osasuna. They had taken the lead through Isaac Romero before Ante Budemir levelled the score. Suso saw red with four minutes to go, but fortunately for the hosts, their opponents failed to capitalise. A victory away at Rayo Vallecano followed, as Youssef En-Nesyri scored either side of an Isi Palazon equaliser.

Revenge was taken on Atletico Madrid, with Sevilla earning a 1-0 win of their own. Atletico enjoyed more possession, and more shots, but could not recover from conceding a 15th-minute opener to Romero. Sevilla were not able to take this winning momentum into their most recent game, however, as they held Valencia to a goalless draw away from home. There was not much to split the two sides in possession, but Valencia restricted the visitors to just the one shot on goal.

FlashPicks Prediction

Real Madrid will be looking to bounce back from their latest draw, and we expect them to do so. Sevilla have had a disappointing season, despite their recent upturn in form but they will not be able to overcome the league leaders. We predict: Real Madrid 2-0 Sevilla
