Both teams have had underwhelming campaigns so far. Newcastle currently sit eighth and are in an intense battle to earn European football for next season. They were in the Champions League this year, but look unlikely to repeat that feat as they are 15 points behind the top four. Chelsea, similarly, are battling for a top seven place. Right now they are 11th, following their recent draw at Brentford, and are six points adrift of West Ham in seventh, with a game in hand.
Mauricio Pochettinoβs side have struggled all season, unable to find any consistency at either end of the pitch. The defence has not kept a clean sheet in the league since mid-January, and the visitors have the attacking talent to take advantage of this weakness. Alexander Isak leads the way for his team with 10 goals, and should cause the backline some issues. Chelseaβs Cole Palmer recorded his seventh assist last week to take his total goal involvements up to 17, the most of any Blues player aged 21 or under in a single season. There is plenty of talent on display, so each side should enjoy some attacking success.
Since 2020, these two sides have met eight times in the Premier League and a further time in the League Cup. Four of those have been Chelsea wins, whilst Newcastle have been triumphant on three occasions. In this period, the Blues won four in a row, scoring eight and conceding zero. Recent matchups have seen the Magpies come out on top, most recently the reverse fixture earlier this season. Eddie Howeβs side were comfortable 4-1 winners at St Jamesβ Park. Isak scored the opener, before Raheem Sterling equalised with a free-kick. The hosts dominated the second period, scoring two goals in as many minutes to take the game away. They met again in the Carabao Cup, in which Pochettinoβs men were victorious on penalties, after Mykhailo Mudryk levelled the score at 1-1 late on.
