Both teams have had underwhelming campaigns so far. Newcastle currently sit eighth and are in an intense battle to earn European football for next season. They were in the Champions League this year, but look unlikely to repeat that feat as they are 15 points behind the top four. Chelsea, similarly, are battling for a top seven place. Right now they are 11th, following their recent draw at Brentford, and are six points adrift of West Ham in seventh, with a game in hand.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side have struggled all season, unable to find any consistency at either end of the pitch. The defence has not kept a clean sheet in the league since mid-January, and the visitors have the attacking talent to take advantage of this weakness. Alexander Isak leads the way for his team with 10 goals, and should cause the backline some issues. Chelsea’s Cole Palmer recorded his seventh assist last week to take his total goal involvements up to 17, the most of any Blues player aged 21 or under in a single season. There is plenty of talent on display, so each side should enjoy some attacking success.

Since 2020, these two sides have met eight times in the Premier League and a further time in the League Cup. Four of those have been Chelsea wins, whilst Newcastle have been triumphant on three occasions. In this period, the Blues won four in a row, scoring eight and conceding zero. Recent matchups have seen the Magpies come out on top, most recently the reverse fixture earlier this season. Eddie Howe’s side were comfortable 4-1 winners at St James’ Park. Isak scored the opener, before Raheem Sterling equalised with a free-kick. The hosts dominated the second period, scoring two goals in as many minutes to take the game away. They met again in the Carabao Cup, in which Pochettino’s men were victorious on penalties, after Mykhailo Mudryk levelled the score at 1-1 late on.

Form Guide

Chelsea Form Guide

In their last five games, Chelsea have won two, drawn two and lost one. The Blues have been inconsistent all season, but more so in recent weeks. They began this stretch of games away at Crystal Palace, though had to come from behind to take all three points. Jefferson Lerma put the hosts ahead with a long-range strike, before ex-Palace man Conor Gallagher equalised just after the break. Gallagher scored again in the 91st minute to steal the win. Enzo Fernandez added a third to put the game to bed. They then faced a tough trip to champions Man City, but they did well to leave with a draw. They were disappointed not to leave with victory, however, as they took the lead through Raheem Sterling. Both sides missed a host of chances, before Rodri levelled the score.

This preceded the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley in which they faced Liverpool. Unfortunately for Pochettino’s men, they fell to a last gasp Virgil Van Dijk goal in extra-time to miss out on the trophy. A return to action followed in the FA Cup fifth round, where they took on Leeds at Stamford Bridge. The visitors went a goal up due to a defensive mishap, but Nicolas Jackson soon cancelled it out. Mykhailo Mudryk put his side in front before half-time, though Leeds once again got one back. Chelsea left it late again as Gallagher scored in the last minute of regular time to avoid a second extra-time period in the space of a week. Their most recent outing came away at Brentford, where they gave up a first-half lead before having to come back from 2-1 down to salvage a point thanks to Axel Disasi.

Newcastle Form Guide

In their last five games, Newcastle have won two, drawn two and lost one. Last weekend saw them take on Wolves at home, and they comfortably dispatched of them as they won 3-0. Alexander Isak scored the opener in the 14th minute, before Anthony Gordon doubled the lead before half-time. The victory was completed in stoppage time as Tino Livramento added a third.

This followed on from their midweek draw at Blackburn in the fifth round of the FA Cup. The 1-1 result in normal time led to a period of extra-time, which saw golden opportunities for both teams to take the tie. However, neither side could find the back of the net which sent the game to penalties. The Magpies prevailed 4-3 in the shootout, as they beat lower league opposition to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition. It was a great response to the heavy defeat they had suffered the weekend prior. Their trip to third place Arsenal ended in a 4-1 defeat as they were overwhelmed by their hosts from minute one. The Gunners were two up at the break and dominated throughout.

Newcastle’s inconsistent league form meant they dropped points at home to Bournemouth, after beating Nottingham Forest 3-2. Against the Cherries, they came from behind twice to take a point, whilst they gave up the lead twice in their game at Forest. Bruno Guimaraes eventually scored the winner in that game.

FlashPicks Prediction

Chelsea’s struggles have mostly come on the road, as they have lost just once in 12 games at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle have been inconsistent as of late, but should cause a shaky defence some problems. There are goals in it for both sides – Chelsea 2-2 Newcastle
