Man City travel to Liverpool hoping for three points to overtake them at the top of the Premier League table. Following their 3-1 derby victory over Man United last weekend, they sit second, just a point behind Liverpool who are currently in the lead. This game will go a long way in deciding who will be lifting the trophy in May, with Arsenal behind in third waiting to take advantage of any dropped points. Victory for City would move them back to the summit, whilst three points for Liverpool could extend their lead and strengthen their grip on first place. Defeat for either would provide a huge blow for their title chances.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are in excellent form, not dropping any points since their 3-1 loss at Arsenal in early February. They have been struck with multiple injuries to important players, but have kept finding ways to win, epitomised by their 1-0 victory at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Darwin Nunez’s 99th minute winner ensured that they remain in pole position.

The visitors are in equally as good form, winning nine of their last ten games. Their only dropped points came against Chelsea at the Etihad in a 1-1 draw.

Liverpool are the league’s top scorers this season with 64, whilst City are second with 62. There will be an abundance of attacking talent on display, in particular Erling Haaland who leads the way with 18 goals, and Mo Salah, who has 15. Kevin De Bruyne will also play a huge part, having scored and assisted five goals since his return. However, the Reds also possess the second-best defensive record, so they are well-equipped to at least slow down Pep Guardiola’s team.

Since 2020, these two teams have met 11 times. There has been very little to split them, with City winning four and Liverpool winning three. Three of these fixtures came in cup competitions, Liverpool victorious in an FA Cup semi-final in 2022, and City on top in the League Cup later that year. Liverpool also beat them in the Community Shield. Liverpool are winless in three against this weekend’s opponents with two losses. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in a 1-1 draw. Haaland opened the scoring in the first half, before Trent Alexander-Arnold equalised late on.

Liverpool Team News

Jurgen Klopp has a number of absentees to contend with. He may be able to get some players back this weekend, however, with Mo Salah, Curtis Jones and Ryan Gravenberch tipped for a possible return. The likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson and Diogo Jota are still further back in their recoveries.

Man City Team News

Jack Grealish is the only injury for Pep Guardiola. Josko Gvardiol returned from an ankle injury to make the bench last weekend, but Grealish’s groin injury may rule him out for a few games.

Form Guide

Liverpool Form Guide

In their last five games, Liverpool have a 100% record, winning all five. They are entering top form at the perfect time, despite their injury struggles. Their victories have come in three different competitions, with them returning to Europa League action against Sparta Prague in midweek ahead of the weekend’s fixture against Man City.

This stretch of games began with a dominant 4-1 win at Brentford. They did not break the deadlock until the 35th minute, as Darwin Nunez opened the scoring. Alexis Mac Allister, Mo Salah and Cody Gakpo added further goals, whilst Ivan Toney pulled one back for the hosts. They repeated this 4-1 scoreline the following week against Luton. The visitors actually took the lead early on and held it until the second half. Virgil Van Dijk equalised, however, then the Reds took the game away with strikes from Gakpo, Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott.

The first trophy of the season was up for grabs, as they took on Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final. Though they were severely weakened through injuries, they managed to win the game at the death in extra-time thanks to a Van Dijk header. There were no hangovers as they quickly returned to action in the FA Cup, facing Southampton at Anfield. They advanced to the quarter-finals of the competition with a 3-0 win. Dropped points finally seemed like a possibility as Klopp’s side travelled to Nottingham Forest. The game was heading for a 0-0 draw, before Nunez stepped up to score in the ninth minute of stoppage time to take home a massive three points.

Man City Form Guide

In the last five games, Man City have won four and drawn one. Their most recent game came against their city rivals Man United, in which they won 3-1. They had to come from behind after Marcus Rashford put United ahead with a wonder strike. Phil Foden levelled with an excellent finish of his own, before he and Erling Haaland won them the game.

This followed an incredible 6-2 victory at Luton in the fifth round of the FA Cup. This tie saw Haaland score five goals in just 58 minutes. It was a very entertaining game, as Mateo Kovacic also got on the scoresheet helping them advance to the quarter-finals of the competition. Two narrow wins preceded this, as they beat both Bournemouth and Brentford 1-0. Foden scored a first-half goal which proved to be the difference between City and the Cherries. Haaland’s 71st minute finish won the game at home to Brentford. Their only dropped points in this run came at the Etihad against Chelsea. Haaland uncharacteristically missed a host of chances that he would usually convert. Ex-City man Raheem Sterling opened the scoring, but his strike was cancelled out late on by a goal from Rodri. They had time to find a winner, but could not do so. Before they take on Liverpool this weekend, City face a second leg tie with Copenhagen in the last 16 of the Champions League. They have a 3-1 lead.

FlashPicks Prediction

These two teams take each other on with the feeling that it is a must not lose. It will be an entertaining, but tight affair and it will be difficult to find a winner. However, both sides should see some attacking success, but there will not be anything to split the pair – Liverpool 1-1 Man City
