Everton vs Sheffield United: Preview, Prediction & Betting Picks

Everton host already relegated Sheffield United in the Premier League, having secured safety for themselves in recent weeks.

Date: 5/11/24

Kick-off time: 5:00 AM (Pacific Time)

ET Venue: Goodison Park

With just two games remaining for both sides, neither has much left to play for. Sheffield United sits bottom, a position they've held for most of the season, and with a recent defeat to Newcastle, their immediate return to the Championship has been confirmed. It's been a dreadful season for the Blades, and it seems their fate was decided for a while. That being said, they'll want to end the season on a high, starting with a trip to Goodison Park.

Sean Dyche's side has been near the bottom of the table all year, not helped by multiple point deductions which had left their Premier League status in serious doubt. They had gone through a torrid stretch of form between December and April, which had seen them winless in thirteen league games. However, they've found form at the right time with three wins in four to secure another season in the top flight.

There should be goals in this one, particularly for the hosts, as they take on a defense who have conceded a whopping 100 goals and counting. This is the joint-most by a team in a single season in the Premier League. Sixteen of those have come in the last four, which will leave the Everton attack confident in finding the back of the net. Despite going through a long scoring drought, Dominic Calvert-Lewin tops the charts with seven goals, a tally which he'll hope to add to. The Toffees have conceded just one in four, and this strong defensive streak should continue, with the Blades having the worst frontline in the division.

Since 2019, these two sides have met five times, all in the Premier League. There hasn't been much to separate the pair, with them winning twice each and drawing once. The reverse fixture earlier this season resulted in the points being shared, as they drew 2-2. Abdoulaye Doucoure put Everton in front, but Sheffield United turned it around with a Cameron Archer strike and Jordan Pickford own goal. Arnaut Danjuma scored the equalizer early in the second half.

Form Guide

Everton Form Guide

In their last five games, Everton has won three, drawn one, and lost one. It's been a fantastic stretch for the Toffees, who have officially secured Premier League survival. It was a disastrous start to the run, however, as they were defeated 6-0 away at Chelsea. Cole Palmer scored a 30-minute perfect hat-trick, before Nicolas Jackson added another before halftime. Palmer netted his fourth from the spot, and Alfie Gilchrist completed the rout in the 90th minute.

They responded well by beating fellow relegation battlers Nottingham Forest 2-0 at Goodison Park. Idrissa Gueye opened the scoring, and Dwight McNeil bagged a second to give them a comfortable cushion. Perhaps their biggest win of the season followed, as they secured another 2-0 win, this time against their arch rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby. Jarrad Branthwaite broke the deadlock just before the half hour mark. Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave them some breathing room with another, on the hour, and they were able to hold on to record a massive result. Survival was confirmed with a 1-0 win over Brentford. Gueye was the only goalscorer with their only shot on target in the narrow victory. Their most recent game was away at Luton. The points were shared in a 1-1 draw as Calvert-Lewin scored the opener before Carlton Morris leveled it prior to halftime.

Sheffield United Form Guide

In their last five games, Sheffield United has lost all of them. It's been a disastrous stretch for the league's bottom side, whose relegation was finally confirmed recently. It began with a 2-0 loss away at Brentford. It was a fairly even game, but the hosts were the only side able to find the back of the net. They went ahead midway through the second half after Oliver Luke Arblaster converted into his own net. It remained this way until stoppage time when Frank Onyeka added an insurance goal.

The team directly above them, Burnley, beat them 4-1 the following week. They lost convincingly with Gustavo Hamer as their only scorer. They responded well the following week at Old Trafford, but two late goals condemned them to a 4-2 loss against Manchester United. The Blades went ahead twice through Jayden Bogle and Ben Brereton Diaz, but were pegged back by Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes. With 10 minutes to go, the Portuguese scored once more to put the hosts ahead, before Rasmus Hojlund added another.

Another heavy loss followed, this time 5-1 at Newcastle, which confirmed their immediate return to the Championship. The visitors actually took the lead through Anel Ahmedhodzic, but five unanswered goals from Isak (x2), Guimaraes, Wilson, and a Ben Osman own goal turned it around. Their most recent game was at home to Nottingham Forest, in which they lost 3-1. United took the lead early on from the penalty spot, but the visitors were able to turn it around with an excellent strike from Callum Hudson-Odoi and a Ryan Yates goal. Hudson-Odoi then added a third.

FlashPicks Prediction

Both sides have nothing to play for, with Everton safe and Sheffield United already relegated. The hosts have displayed some excellent form recently, resulting in their survival, and we expect this to continue against a defeated visiting side – Everton 2-0 Sheffield United
