Tottenham vs Burnley: Preview, Prediction & Betting Picks

Tottenham host Burnley in the Premier League, in a game that could have an important impact at both ends of the table.

Date: 11/05/24

Kick-off time: 5:00 AM Pacific Time

Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Spurs' Champions League hopes have quickly faded away with four consecutive losses. This is the longest run the club has endured in 20 years, which included defeats against Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Liverpool. They are now fifth, and are nervously looking over their shoulders heading into their final three games of the season. Only four points separate themselves and Newcastle, while Chelsea are a further two points back. Three points are a must for Spurs if they want to avoid a nervy end to the season.

Burnley look set for an immediate return to the Championship. They had briefly looked like they could pull off an escape, but their 4-1 defeat at home to Newcastle last time out might have put those hopes to bed. They are 19th, and are five points from safety, meaning it would take a couple of other results to go their way, as well as them winning both of their games to stay up.

The visitors have gotten results at both Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge in recent weeks, and they will hope to achieve this feat once more at a stuttering Spurs. However, the home side has scored at least twice in each of their last four games at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and it would be a tough task for the Clarets to outscore them, considering they have failed to score more than once in six games in a row.

Unsurprisingly, Spurs have dominated this matchup. In 14 Premier League meetings since 2015, the North London club has won nine and lost just two. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in their favor, as they won 5-2 at Turf Moor. The hosts took an early lead, but Spurs turned it around with strikes from Cristian Romero and James Maddison, while Heung-Min Son added a hat-trick. They also eliminated Burnley from the FA Cup in the third round.

Form Guide

Tottenham Form Guide

In their last five games, Tottenham has won one and lost four. It has been a terrible stretch for Spurs, as their hopes of finishing in the top four are slipping away. This run began with their only win, as they comfortably dispatched Nottingham Forest 3-1. An own goal put them in front, though this was canceled out by Chris Wood. Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro secured the three points in the second half.

They couldn't carry this winning momentum into the next game as they were crushed 4-0 away at Newcastle. Spurs were extremely dominant in possession, enjoying 73% of the ball overall, but Alexander Isak broke the deadlock after half an hour, before Anthony Gordon doubled the lead almost instantly. A third was scored by Isak shortly after the restart, and Fabian Schar added a fourth late on to complete the rout.

An important North London derby followed, and they got off to a dreadful start, going 3-0 down at the break, though they did have a goal disallowed earlier on. They staged a bit of a comeback in the second with a Cristian Romero goal then a Heung-min Son penalty making it 3-2. However, it was too little too late for Spurs. Another London derby was next, this time against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but they lost 2-0 with goals coming from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson. Their most recent game was a trip to Liverpool in which their struggles continued with a 4-2 defeat. They went 4-0 down, before pulling two back, but it was too late for them to add any more.

Burnley Form Guide

In their last five games, Burnley has won one, drawn two, and lost two. It's been a difficult stretch for Vincent Kompany's men as their hopes of Premier League survival continue to slip away. This run began with a crucial fixture away at fellow relegation battlers Everton. They were unable to pick up any precious points as they narrowly lost 1-0. They missed the opportunity to close the gap on the Toffees ahead of them. The Clarets were the dominant side in possession, but could only manage one shot on target. Dominic Calvert-Lewin's goal on the stroke of halftime proved to be the difference, and Dara O'Shea's red card midway through the second half made his side's task much tougher.

Their search for a win continued as they responded with a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton. It was scoreless for the majority, and despite the visitors attempting 20 shots, it was Burnley who went ahead late on through Josh Brownhill. Their lead lasted just five minutes though as goalkeeper Arijanet Muric scored an own goal. They finally recorded a victory at bottom club Sheffield United, winning 4-1. Jacob Bruun Larsen, Lorenz Assignon, Lyle Foster, and Johann Berg Gudmundsson were all on the scoresheet.

Despite not winning, they picked up another impressive result at Old Trafford, drawing 1-1. It was a fairly even game throughout, and Antony thought he scored the winner with 11 minutes remaining. The Clarets refused to lie down and were able to level it from the spot through Zeki Amdouni in the final few minutes. Unfortunately, this momentum was quickly halted with a crushing 4-1 loss at home to Newcastle in their most recent game. Burnley had made a good start, but goals from Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff, Bruno GuimarΓ£es, and Alexander Isak condemned them to a large defeat. O'Shea pulled one back late on.

FlashPicks Prediction

Spurs have gone through a terrible stretch of late, but we expect them to finally pick up a win against relegation-threatened Burnley. With home advantage, they should be far too strong for their lowly opponents – Tottenham 3-0 Burnley
