The Serie A title is effectively out of reach as Inter Milan lead by 14 points with nine games remaining. However, there are a number of positions below that are still up for grabs. AC Milan sit second behind their rivals, and are three clear of Juventus in third. Second was a position that Juve had mostly held, but the recent surge by Milan in which they have won three league games in a row, has seen them jump ahead. Another victory this weekend would only solidify their spot and perhaps create a little breathing room. However, a defeat would open door for Juventus to go level on points. It would take an unlikely collapse for them to fall out of the top four altogether, as they are 11 clear of Roma in fifth.
Fiorentina, in contrast, are in desperate need of a win to keep their slim hopes of a European spot alive. They currently occupy eighth and are on 43 points, which is eight behind fifth. Three points would maintain that gap at the very least, and at best cut it to five. A loss would significantly damage their chances, and could even see them drop to as low as 11th, depending on other results.
In all competitions, Milan are on a five-game winning streak, but going back further, they have kept just two clean sheets in their last eight. The hosts are enduring greater struggles at the back, shutting out an opponent just once in twelve. As a result, there could be goals in it for both teams. Fiorentina will rely on Nicolas Gonzalez, who is their joint top scorer with seven. Milan will look to Olivier Giroud who has 12. Christian Pulisic has also contributed nine goals.
These two teams have played out some very close games in recent years. Milan have edged the last five meetings with three wins to two, but all have been decided by one goal. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended in the Rossoneriβs favour, as they won 1-0. Theo Hernandez scored the winner from the penalty spot.
