Since sacking Jose Mourinho in mid-January, Roma have won six of seven league games, which has moved them up to fifth in the table and firmly in the race for the Champions League places. They currently trail fourth place Bologna by four points. A victory this weekend would allow them to keep pace with those above them, or potentially close the gap should other results go their way. Defeat could see them fall further behind and open the door for the likes of Atalanta to take advantage.

Fiorentina are not too far behind themselves, sitting in seventh place. They missed an opportunity to pick up a win against 10-men Torino, but are still only five points behind Roma. Three points would see them significantly close the gap on their opponents and perhaps gain some momentum going forward.

There should be goals in this game for Daniele De Rossi’s side, as they have scored at least three goals in the last three games. Paulo Dybala has entered into a rich vein of scoring form, bagging four in the last two. This includes a hat-trick against Torino, and he leads the way for the club with 12 goals. Romelu Lukaku has nine strikes and should be confident in adding to his tally against a defence who has kept just one clean sheet in nine games. Giacomo Bonaventura and Nicolas Gonzales have seven goals apiece for La Viola, and will be the main attacking threats for Vincenzo Italiano. Roma have also had difficulties in keeping clean sheets recently, so it could be an end-to-end game.

In eight meetings since 2020, Roma have enjoyed more success with five wins to Fiorentina’s two. It has been a fiery matchup in recent years, as six red cards have been handed out in this stretch of games. Two of those red cards came in the reverse fixture earlier this season, both to Roma players. The game ended 1-1, the first draw between the sides since 2019. Lukaku broke the deadlock in just the fifth minute, but Nicola Zelewski saw red for a second yellow in the second half. Fiorentina took advantage of the extra man almost immediately, as Lucas Martinez scored the equaliser. Lukaku was then shown a straight red in the 87th minute to send Roma down to nine men. It was too late for the visitors to find a winner, however, as the game ended level.

Form Guide

Fiorentina Form Guide

In their last five games, Fiorentina have won two, drawn two and lost one. Their latest game saw them held to a 0-0 draw at Torino, who had a man sent off on the stroke of half-time. Despite their man advantage, they couldn’t find the breakthrough and missed out on a much-needed win. They did pick up three points the week prior, as they narrowly beat Lazio 2-1. They had to come from behind to do so, as Luis Alberto opened the scoring for the visitors just before the break. It was a good response from Fiorentina, with Michael Kayode and Giacomo Bonaventura scoring two goals in eight minutes to turn the game on its head.

Dropped points against Empoli preceded this, in which they gave up a 1-0 lead to draw 1-1. Again, they enjoyed more possession, but struggled to convert their chances. A disappointing result at Bologna saw them lose 2-0. They failed to continue the momentum they had picked up from a crushing 5-1 win over Frosinone. Goals from Andrea Belotti, Jonathan Ikone and Lucas Martinez gave them a commanding 3-0 lead at half-time. Nicolas Gonzalez made it four, then Antonin Barak added a fifth after a consolation.

Roma Form Guide

In their last five games, Roma have won three, and drawn two. Roma are in a good run of form, as they are unbeaten in this stretch. It began with a 1-1 draw with Feyenoord in the Europa League first leg. They went behind just before half-time, but Romelu Lukaku equalised, to take the tie back to Rome level. They booked their place in the last 16 of the competition on penalties, with another 1-1 draw meaning the tie was still level on aggregate. Both goals were scored in the first 15 minutes, as Pellegrini cancelled out Santiago Gimenez’s opener. The hosts prevailed 4-2 in the shootout, which means they now face Brighton in the next round. The first leg of that tie will take place on Thursday, before their trip to Fiorentina.

Between these two legs was a 3-0 win at Frosinone. Dean Huijsen, Sardar Azmoun and Leandro Paredes were all on the scoresheet. They returned from European action with another victory, this time a 3-2 result at home to Torino. Paulo Dybala scored a hat-trick as they responded well to a Duvan Zapata equaliser. Their most recent outing was a dominant 4-1 victory at Monza. The visitors were 4-0 up with goals from Pellegrini, Lukaku, Dybala and Paredes, before the hosts scored a consolation with three minutes to go.

FlashPicks Prediction

Fiorentina have been inconsistent, and face a Roma team who have won three league games in a row. We expect the visitors to extend this run, but they will not be able to keep a clean sheet – Fiorentina 1-3 Roma
