March Madness refers to the annual NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament, which is a single-elimination college basketball tournament held every spring.
The tournament typically takes place in March and April, hence the name "March Madness."
The tournament is organized by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and features 68 college basketball teams from the Division I level of the NCAA. The teams are selected through a combination of automatic bids, which are granted to conference champions, and at-large bids, which are given to teams selected by the NCAA Selection Committee based on their regular-season performance.
The tournament is structured in a bracket format, with teams seeded from 1 to 16 in four different regions. The single-elimination format means that once a team loses a game, it is eliminated from the tournament.
March Madness is made up of 68 teams.
On Selection Sunday, before any tournament game is played, those teams are ranked 1 through 68 by the Selection Committee, with the best team in college basketball sitting at No. 1.
