⬆️ Teams Moving Up

⬆️ Gonzaga Bulldogs No. 23 to No. 19

The Zags began the season as the No. 11 team in the AP Poll. With some glaring departures from their program they began the season playing solid but not dominant like in years past. They also notably scheduled some tough non-conference opponents early in the year such as Purdue and UConn, two top 5 teams at the time.

Gonzaga’s downfall came when they lost to San Diego State and then Santa Clara in a span of three games. This led to them being unranked for the first time in years. Gonzaga remained unranked for the next 12 games. Recent wins over then No. 17 Kentucky and No. 17 St. Mary’s by 13 points has shot them back up to now being No. 19.

⬆️ BYU Cougars Unranked to No. 20

The BYU Cougars started off as an unranked team. After a 6-0 start they cracked the top 25 in the 19th slot. Since then this team has hovered around that same ranking. A loss against Kansas State at the end of February knocked them out of the top 25 rankings.

This sudden jolt this past week from unranked back to No. 20 was due to their massive win over Kansas who was the No. 7 team in the country. This came after their win over No. 11 Baylor. BYU is hot heading into the Big 12 tournament and should be a team to watch.

⬇️ Teams Moving Down

⬇️ Kansas Jayhawks No.7 to No. 14

The aforementioned Kansas dropped seven spots following a recent loss to a then unranked BYU. Kansas has been as high as the No. 2 team in the country this year and looked like they would be a lock for a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Following their loss to BYU, Kansas lost their next game as well to Baylor to further this downward spiral. They will need some big wins down the stretch to just be in the running for a 2 seed in the tournament now. The wheels haven’t completely fallen off yet as they will look to correct this bump in the road before Selection Sunday.

⬇️ St. Mary’s Gaels No. 17 to No. 23

It was a rapid rise for St. Mary’s after a less-than-promising start to the season. To open up the year St. Mary’s lost to Weber State in their third game and then dropped the next four of five contests following that.

This team was 3-5 to start the season but then went on to lose just one out of their next 22 games. One single loss in their last game to Gonzaga dropped them six spots from 17 to 23. These smaller schools can’t afford to lose games due to their strength of schedule being so weak to begin with.
