The Toronto Blue Jays take on the St. Louis Cardinals in Toronto tonight for the second and last game of this interleague series. The Blue Jays absolutely dominated the game yesterday. The Cardinals took the lead early before the Blue Jays stormed back. They really got to the Cardinals bullpen to score some runs and win the game 10-3. The Cardinals will still be without both their top hitters in Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado because they are unvaccinated.
The Blue Jays have also been on fire lately, they have won their last seven games in a row, and they have been doing it emphatically. They have been rejuvenized with new manager John Schneider and they are playing well for him. Kevin Gausman is starting for the Blue Jays, and he has been up and down this season. He has pitched very well in each of his last five starts though allowing just 5 earned runs in his last 20 innings pitched. The Cardinals also tend to struggle against tough righties and Gausman has a very good splitter he can use against both righties and lefties.
Adam Wainwright has been good this season in what is likely his final season as a pro. He is 6-8 with a 3.40 ERA, but he has been much better at home going 3-3 with a 2.01 ERA. He is just 3-5 with a 4.81 ERA on the road. He has also been struggling a bit lately going 1-4 with a 4.36 ERA in his last seven starts. He has also walked seven batters in his last two starts which is very unlike him. Walks won’t fly against this Blue Jays lineup right now, so he’ll need to have his pinpoint accuracy because he doesn’t have the fastball that he used to.
The Cardinals are also just 22-27 on the road this season, they have been much worse on the road even when they have their top two hitters in the lineup. The Blue Jays have also been much better at home this season at 31-19 and they have scored much more at home too. They have multiple hitters hot right now and I really don’t think they lose against a depleted Cardinals team to end this winning streak. So, the only question after that would be can they win by two runs. They’ve been scoring a ton lately, so I would think it would be multiple runs, but I also would be worried about a walk off. This is still good value either way.
