Golden State Warriors vs Phoenix Suns Predictions & Betting Odds

It’s a Tuesday night clash in the NBA as two Western Conference heavyweights Golden State Warriors and LA Clippers lock horns at Chase Center. Tip-off is set for 10 pm ET and you can watch the game live on TNT.

Points Spread: Suns -2.5

This will be the first road game of the season for the defending champions who are 2-1 on the year so far after wins over the Lakers and Kings, plus a loss to the Denver Nuggets in between those games. Head coach Steve Kerr has to be happy with the way his team started off the campaign following all the drama that went on after the incident between Draymond Green and Jordan Poole. Stephen Curry is already in solid form, he is averaging 33.3 points per game on 47% shooting from the field and he is also yet to miss a free throw in 3 games. Beating Phoenix on the road is never easy, but the Warriors were able to do that last season 116-107 as they split the season series 2-2. Golden State did win 2 of the last 3 meetings and having covered the spread 7 times in the last 10 meetings there is definitely optimism ahead of tonight’s game.

The Suns suffered a minor setback following their opening night win over Dallas as they fell at Portland in OT, but they bounced back quickly with a 112-95 dominant win over the Clippers this weekend. A 15-point lead after the 1st quarter ensured the result would never be in doubt. Devin Booker had himself a game with 35 points, including 5 threes made. Chris Paul also had a solid outing with 11 assists against his former team, however his scoring has fallen off a cliff compared to last season, so that’s something to look out for. Perimeter defense played a big role in deciding the outcome of that game as they held the Clippers to just 28% shooting from three-point land. Against a three-point happy Warriors team it’ll be key to repeat that performance tonight in front of the home fans. Speaking of home fans, they’ve been a huge boost to the Suns lately as they are 5-1 SU in their last 6 played in the Valley.

I never like betting against the champs, but this could be a tough spot for them on the road against a motivated Suns squad. Defensively they’ve struggled a bit over their first 3 games of the season and this could be the Suns’ best chance of beating them. Phoenix did win the last meeting of the regular season last year, I think they get the job done in front of the home fans here. Back them to cover.

Total Points: Under 225

This will be a clash of contrasting styles as these two teams couldn’t be any different over the first 3 games of the season. The Warriors have pushed the pace quite a bit against the Lakers, Nuggets and Kings, as a result they rank first in the NBA in possessions per game at 110.3 a night.

Phoenix ranks only 27th in that category playing at a pace of 96.8 after 3 games played. Make no mistake about it though, the Warriors are more than capable of slowing things down when needed and locking teams up on defense.

If we look at the head-to-head duels between these two sides we can notice the last 11 of 13 games have all gone under the total. This includes 6 of the last 7 games played in Phoenix, so I’d say there is a high chance of another low scoring game here. An average of 214.3 points per game has been scored between the teams in the last 10 meetings, well above tonight’s projected total of 225 points. Suns have gone under in 5 straight when playing teams from their own division, I think that trend continues tonight so let’s back the under here.
