LA Lakers vs Denver Nuggets Game 1: BETTING TIPS, PREDICTION & BETTING ODDS

Many people doubted the Lakers heading into their play-in game vs New Orleans, but once again King James delivered a performance to remember and now they face the defending champs in the first round. A lot of people have been asking for this match-up and it came a lot earlier than everyone expected. It could be a wise move by the Lakers, Denver is arguably the only team that can stop them in the West, if they can somehow surprise them in the opening round then the path is wide open for a potential NBA Finals appearance. Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves though. LA has lost 8 straight vs the Nuggets, including a 4-game sweep in last season’s conference finals. They’re also winless in their last 5 visits to Ball Arena and have failed to cover in 5 straight meetings.

Comparing this season’s Nuggets to the ones that won the title last year, some people would say this is a slightly weaker team. I’m not of that opinion, I think health is going to be the only factor that determines this series. If Jamal Murray can remain healthy here then the Nuggets should be winning this series in 6 games at most. Denver ended the regular season 4-1 SU/ATS, all of their top players are in peak form, especially Nikola Jokic who will most likely win his 3rd regular season MVP award. Denver is 9-2 SU in their last 11 home games, they’ve also covered in 4 of their last 6 overall when they are the favorite. One worrying stat if you’re a Nuggets fan is the fact that they are just 4-8 ATS in their last 12 vs Western Conference opponents.

LA Lakers Point Spread Prediction

Lakers +6.5 Point Spread is available at -110 odds

It was the Nuggets by 12, 8 and 10 points in the 3 meetings during the regular season and now they head into Game 1 as 6.5 point favorites. After watching the Lakers performs so well to close out the regular season, I am not ready to discount them so easily in the series opener. I’m not sure if they can win, but it’s definitely going to be a close finish. I’ll take LA to cover.

LA Lakers vs Denver Nuggets Game 1 Total Points: Over 223.5

Over 223.5 Total Points is available at -110 odds

The main difference between these Lakers and the ones that got swept by the Nuggets last year is the productivity of point guard D’Angelo Russell. He’s upped his average by more than 10 points compared to that series, his scoring could very well be the X-Factor here. The Lakers are known for their fast pace, they finished the regular season 4th in the league averaging 101.3 possessions per game. I am of the opinion that their best chance to win this series is to play as fast as possible, potentially wearing out Nikola Jokic who isn’t the fastest player out there. Denver executes at a slightly higher level offensively than the Lakers do. They finished the regular season in 5th place in offensive rating, scoring 117.8 points per 100 possessions. For Game 1 we have a projected total of 223.5 points, a number that was surpassed in 2 of the 3 regular season meetings. In the series opener last year we got a combined point total of 258 points. I’m not saying we’ll get close to that number here, but I wouldn’t be shocked if we got into the low 230s. Back the over.
