Fresh off their 100-88 win over Phoenix, the Philadelphia 76ers hit the road and travel to Atlanta to take on the Hawks in hopes of winning their 4th road game in a row. Tip-off is scheduled for 7.30 pm ET, catch the game live on NBA TV.
This will be the 1st of 4 regular season meetings between the Sixers and Hawks, last season they played a total of 3 times and the 76ers won twice. This time around they’ll have to be without James Harden who is out for the next month with a foot injury. That wasn’t an issue against Phoenix, Joel Embiid was dominant with 33 points, while Tobias Harris added 22.
Tyrese Maxey has taken over the point guard duties in Harden’s absence, he shot just 4-for-18 from the field vs the Suns as he adapts to his new role. He goes up against a physically similar player in Trae Young tonight, the Sixers have covered the spread in 3 of 5 road games this season.
Atlanta’s form is largely dependent on where they play. This team has gone 16-4 SU in their last 20 home games, so that’s a good sign heading into tonight’s game. Prior to last night’s loss against Utah, they connected 3 wins in a row and were the first team to beat the Milwaukee Bucks this season. The good news is Young returned to the line-up after missing one game, but his shooting is still off which could be an issue against Philadelphia. Aside from Young, the 76ers will have their hands full guarding Dejounte Murray who is 2nd on the team in scoring with an average of 22.3 points per game, but on much better efficiency. Atlanta has a habit of covering the spread in games played on a Thursday, they’ve done so in 4 of their last 5.
Joel Embiid will be a problematic match-up for Atlanta here. He’s had a 20 and 10 game in both of his last two vs Atlanta, plus not too long ago he dropped 49 on them. With Young’s shooting woes continuing, I can see the Sixers getting something out of tonight’s game. Back the road team here.
Despite both teams having defensive liabilities at the point guard position in Maxey and Young, the last couple of meetings ended with neither team being able to crack the 100 point mark. That’s been the trend in head-to-head matches between these teams with the under cashing in 4 of the last 5 played at State Farm Arena.
The oddsmakers have set the total at a pretty high 222.5 points, I don’t think we’ll come close to that mark in tonight’s game. Philly’s last two games have both gone under and have seen 188 and 210 points, while Atlanta has gone under in 14 of their last 19 games vs Eastern Conference opponents. With Young struggling from the floor and James Harden not playing, a lot of points are left on the table here. The last 10 meetings have averaged 213.4 points per game, I think a result somewhere in that region is very possible here. Let’s go with the under.
