It was a heated game in the quarter finals between the Netherlands and Argentina, with the referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz producing a total of 13 yellow cards during the match and 1 red card right after the penalty shootout for unsportsmanlike behavior. That’s been the style of play the Argentinians have nurtured at this tournament and in the Copa America prior to that. If we combine the two tournaments they’ve collected a total of 21 yellow cards, so discipline is a word unknown to this team. Nicolas Otamendi is one of the more heated players in defense, he leads the team in fouls with 1.8 committed per game. He is also 3rd on the team in tackles per game, so he’s no stranger to going after the ball when the opposition is in control. Croatia likes to hold the ball a lot, they had more possession in their game against Brazil, so there will be plenty of opportunities for Otamendi to get into it with the Croatia players. It’s also wroth noting that he got a yellow card in the last match played between these two teams, back at the World Cup in 2018.

Modric has been somewhat reserved going forward at this World Cup, which is normal as you can’t really expect a 37-year old to produce on both ends on a consistent basis. With the stakes going up each game now, he has upped his level of play and against Brazil he played arguably his best game of the World Cup so far. With another World Cup final at stake here, the stage is set for the Croatian captain to once again put in a performance for the ages for his country. At this age this will likely be his last World Cup, so I’m expecting him to leave it all out there on the pitch. He averages a little under 1 shot per game so far, but having scored against the Argies in 2018 will certainly give him the confidence he needs to try his luck once again here. He also takes all the penalties for Croatia, which is also a plus for our bet here. I expect Modric to try his luck at least once in this game.
