Columbus Crew @ Inter Miami

The battle for the last playoff spot in the East is red hot right now. By red hot, I mean it’s anyone's spot to grab if they can get some wins. Columbus currently holds 7th place and the final playoff spot in the East with 41 points. Right behind them is New England with 38 points, and they have a difficult road match in Houston tonight. In 9th place we have Inter Miami, with 36 points. Miami absolutely have to come away with all three points tonight at home if they want to continue battling for the final playoff spot. This is a tough ask, because Miami has lost their last three games outright. They are not in good form at the moment.

Miami has had a very good record at home this year at 8-3-3. That is encouraging, because the three game losing skid I mentioned earlier all came on road games. Miami recently beat Toronto and NYCFC at home. Not the most impressive wins in my book, but wins are wins. Unfortunately for Miami, Columbus doesn't really lose on the road. They have the least amount of road losses in the East at a grand total of two. Columbus’s overall road record is 3-9-2. So they don’t often win, but road draws are a great way to be a playoff team if you handle business at home. Columbus did just that back on the 31st of August vs Miami, beating them 1-0.

Miami have struggled without their young forward Leonardo Campana. He has been injured the last six matches and the 34 year old Gonzalo Higuain has been his replacement. Higuain has stepped up and provided a lot of offense for his team in that time. He has recorded three goals and two assists in the last six matches. It’s also important to note that Higuain is the man to take from the penalty spot. Miami are absolutely going to need Higuain to contribute today if they hope to win this game.

Columbus has had four draws in their last four road games. A draw in Miami tonight would be a major victory for Columbus. Picking up one point and preventing Miami from getting three will give them a nice cushion with only five games left on their schedule. Columbus’s best forward, Cucho, has failed to score a goal in the last four matches. He has been able to contribute two assists in those four games, but I feel Columbus will need him to score tonight if they want points. Lucas Zelarayan has managed to step up recently, and netted a goal last match. Bringing him to nine goals total on the season and now leading Columbus’s offensive production. Not a great endorsement for Columbus because Zelarayan is a midfielder and FK specialist. Columbus needs more production from their forwards.
