Uruguay
In their last five games, Uruguay have won four and drawn one. Uruguay came into the competition in mixed form, but got off to the perfect start in their group opener against Panama. They dominated from start to finish, and it took just 16 minutes for them to break the deadlock as Maximiliano Araujo found the back of the net. They were unable to add to this lead until the 85th minute, when Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez struck, but they put the game to bed through him and Matias Vina. Panama pulled one back in stoppage time but it was nothing more than a consolation.
They made it two wins from two with a 5-0 victory over Bolivia. Facundo Pellistri, Nunez, Araujo, Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur were all on the scoresheet. They completed their group with a 100% record thanks to a 1-0 win against USA. Mathias Olivera scored the second half winner.
This set up a huge quarter-final tie against Brazil. Uruguay had just one shot on target, and despite having a man sent off late on, they held on for penalties in which they prevailed 4-2. The winning spot-kick was scored by Manuel Ugarte. Preparations for the tournament ended in an emphatic 4-0 win against Mexico. Nunez scored a hat-trick, including a first-half brace. This added to a further strike from Pellistri.
Colombia
In their last five games, Colombia have won four and drawn one. It has been a dominant stretch for the Colombians, resulting in a top place group finish and a place in the semi-final of Copa America. They ensured top spot by drawing 1-1 with Brazil. Raphinha gave their opponents the lead, but Daniel Munoz equalised on the stroke of half-time to share the points.
This followed two consecutive wins to open up the tournament, first against Paraguay, 2-1. Munoz and Jefferson Lerma put them two up before the break, before Julio Enciso halved the deficit. However, Paraguay were unable to complete a comeback. They then had a much more comfortable 3-0 victory over Costa Rica, in which Luis Diaz, Davinson Sanchez and Jhon Cordoba were all on the scoresheet.
As a result, they set up a quarter-final tie with surprise package Panama. However, they brushed them aside with ease, winning 5-0. Cordoba broke the deadlock, before James Rodriguez, Diaz, Richard Rios and Miguel Borja added to the score. Preparations for the competition ended with a win against Bolivia. They put three past them as Jhon Arias, Cordoba and Diaz found the back of the net.
