Tottenham vs Manchester City: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Date: 14/05/24

Kick-off time: 15:00 EST

Venue: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Two games separate Manchester City and a fourth consecutive Premier League title. If they win both, they will get their hands on the trophy once more. They are currently second, a point behind leaders Arsenal, but this game against Tottenham is their game in hand. Anything but a win would hand the initiative back to the Gunners heading into the final day. City are winners of seven league games in a row, hoping to make it eight.

Spurs are hanging on to their Champions League hopes by a thread, and they will need a win to keep them alive going into the weekend. In fifth, they are four points behind Villa and must hope that they drop points in their last two. It has been a struggle for the hosts recently, losing four of their last five games. A come-from-behind win at home to Burnley at the weekend snapped a four-game losing streak, meaning they will head into this one with some momentum. If they are to pick up a result, it would help their North London rivals Arsenal in the title race.

Pep Guardiola’s men have been lethal in front of goal, scoring 15 in their last four. Natural centre back Josko Gvardiol has registered five goal contributions in his last five games as he has become an unlikely attacking threat. This includes a brace last time out. Erling Haaland still leads the Premier League with 25 goals, whilst Phil Foden has been a large contributor with 16. Spurs have not kept a clean sheet since early March, but at the other end they will rely on top scorer Heung-Min Son to provide an attacking spark.
The home side have a very good record against City in recent seasons, particularly at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In seven visits in all competitions, City have won just once, that victory coming earlier this season in the FA Cup. The reverse fixture at the Etihad ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw. Son scored at both ends to make it 1-1 before the 10th minute mark. The visitors took the lead twice more, but were pegged back both times including a 90th minute equaliser from Dejan Kulusevski.

Tottenham
In their last five games, Tottenham have won one and lost four. It has been a disastrous stretch for Spurs, as their hopes of finishing in the top four are slipping away. This run began with a very heavy and costly 4-0 loss at Newcastle. The visitors were extremely dominant in possession, enjoying 73% of the ball overall, but Alexander Isak broke the deadlock after half an hour, before Anthony Gordon doubled the lead almost instantly. A third was scored by Isak shortly after the restart, and Fabian Schar added a fourth late on to complete the rout.

An important North London derby followed, and they got off to a dreadful start, going 3-0 down at the break, though they did have a goal disallowed earlier on. They staged a bit of a comeback in the second with a Cristian Romero goal then a Heung-min Son penalty making it 3-2. However, it was too little too late for Spurs. Another London derby was next, this time against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, but they lost 2-0 with goals coming from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson. Their most recent game was a trip to Liverpool, though their struggles continued with a 4-2 defeat. They went 4-0 down, before pulling two back, but it was too late for them to add any more.

A return home against Burnley allowed them to get back on track in their most recent fixture. The game resulted in a 2-1 win from behind with goals from Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven securing all three points, which just about keep them alive for a Champions League spot with two games remaining.

Man City
In their last five games, Manchester City have been perfect, winning all of them. It has been the perfect stretch for Man City, as they assert their dominance at the most crucial part of the season. However, this run started with focus on the FA Cup, as they faced Chelsea in the semi-final. Their opponents rued a number of missed chances, but Pep Guardiola’s side won 1-0 to advance to the final where they will play their neighbours Man United back at Wembley Stadium. Bernardo Silva scored the winner with six minutes to go in the game. Attention shifted back to Premier League action, and they returned with a dominant 4-0 win at Brighton. Kevin De Bruyne broke the deadlock, before Phil Foden scored a brace to extend the lead before the break. Julian Alvarez added a fourth in the second half to complete the rout of the Seagulls.

Nottingham Forest were their next opponents and they put up a fight, but could not keep the Champions out as City recorded a 2-0 victory away from home. Josko Gvardiol opened the scoring, and Erling Haaland doubled their advantage. Their most recent game was a home fixture against Wolves. They were convincing 5-1 winners, with Haaland netting four goals. Alvarez scored the fifth whilst Hwang Hee-chan got the consolation.

Their most recent game was a trip to Fulham, in which they thrashed them 4-0. They took a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to an impressive opener from Gvardiol. Their advantage was added to with a strike from Foden, another goal from Gvardiol and an Alvarez penalty.
