CLAIM NOWIn May 2018, a ruling was made by the Supreme Court to overturn a 26-year federal law that effectively banned commercial sports betting and the opportunity for sports organisations to secure betting partners. This allowed each of the 50 states to determine their own sports betting laws.
Online sports betting became legal in New York in January 2022. This is when it officially went live and this coincided with the launch of four online sportsbooks in the state. As of October 2023, users have access to nine different online sportsbooks and are able to place wagers across multiple markets.

When online sports betting first became legal in the state, the initial launch included FanDuel, DraftKings, BetRivers and Caesars Sportsbooks on January 8th. Three more followed just weeks later, as BetMGM, PointsBet and WynnBET entered the scene. BallyBet was the latest operator to go live in New York, going live in July 2022.
Due to the legislation, only nine operators could be selected. Whilst most of the big names have been approved, there are still some sportsbooks yet to be approved in the state. A recent amendment has seen a proposal of expanding the number of sportsbooks from nine to 16, and if passed, expect to see more of the bigger brands get involved.
To bet on sports in New York, customers must be aged 21 or above and physically located in the state of New York. The user can have access to their account and use other features whilst not in New York, but cannot place real-money sports wagers outside of the state.
Customers can sign up to any of the nine available sportsbooks and place wagers across any markets offered.
Customers can bet on all of the major US sports, NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL, as well as MLS. College sports, however, are not as accessible. The state of New York has restrictions in place which prevents users from betting on in-state college teams. If any New York state college team is competing, you will not be able to find any offered odds. This also includes non-NY teams playing in the state, for example if two non-NY colleges faced off at a neutral site, bettors would not be able to place any wagers on this game.
Whilst college sports is off the table, there are a number of professional sports teams in New York and the neighbouring state of New Jersey to place bets on. The NBA has both the Nets and Knicks, NFL has the Giants, Jets and Bills, MLB has the Yankees and Mets whilst the NHL has the Rangers, Islanders, Sabres and Devils.
