Tennessee Online Sports Betting

You’ve got Tennessee sports betting questions. We’ve got answers.

First up: is sports betting legal and live in Tennessee? Yes and yes. The Volunteer State first launched sports betting in November 2020, making it a relatively early adopter of online sports betting.

Next: what do you need to do to bet on sports in Tennessee? The requirements are strict, but there are only two of them. You must be 21 years of age or older, and you must be located in the state of Tennessee when you’re betting. You don’t need to live there. Even visitors can get in on the Tennessee sports betting action. Sports betting apps in Tennessee will confirm your location using your phone’s GPS or a geolocation plugin if you’re using a computer.

The natural next question: which sportsbooks are available in Tennessee? Here’s a quick list. We’ll dive into some of them in more detail further down on this page.

  • BetMGM
  • FanDuel
  • DraftKings
  • Caesars
  • WynnBET
  • Barstool
  • Action 247
  • Wagr (peer-to-peer betting)

Finally, what sports can you bet on in Tennessee? There are only a few restrictions. For the most part, you can bet on any professional or college sports. The only caveat with college betting is you can’t place in-game props or individual player prop bets. Game props are allowed on college sports.

Those are the Tennessee sports betting basics. The rest of this page will cover the rest of what you need to know.

TN Sports Betting Overview, Timeline, And Background

In April 2019, the Tennessee Senate both introduced and passed the state’s sports betting bill. It was especially noteworthy at the time on the national stage because Tennessee has no land-based casinos. The typical method of providing licenses to online operators who partner with retail properties wouldn’t work as a copy-paste in Tennessee. Tennessee’s bill allowed for online-only operators to launch in the market.

With a new approach to sports betting underway, hurdles were bound to pop up. And once certainly did as soon as the State Senate passed the bill. Governor Bill Lee did not sign the bill into law. However, he also chose not to veto it, which paved the way for the bill to become law anyway.

Four sportsbooks launched on November 1, 2020 in Tennessee: Tennessee Action Network 24/7, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM. In March of 2021, Caesars and TwinSpires went live, though TwinSpires shut down about a year later as part of its nationwide withdrawal from sports betting.

Online Sportsbooks Available In Tennessee

There are eight sportsbooks live in Tennessee, though one (Wagr) is a peer-to-peer betting platform and not a traditional real money sportsbook. Here’s a quick overview of our top five platforms in the state.

DraftKings

DraftKings is in the upper echelon of sportsbooks in any market, Tennessee included. The sportsbook runs like a dream, and everything moves quickly and smoothly within the DraftKings app.

You can sort by league, search for your favorite team, or scroll through the homepage to find upcoming games in the DraftKings TN app. DraftKings also has a great slate of promos, with odds boosts, parlay insurance, and referral bonuses often available.

Speaking of bonuses, DraftKings has an excellent welcome offer. When you sign up, you will get a bonus of: Bet $5, Get $250.

BetMGM

BetMGM calls itself “The king of sportsbooks,” and it pretty much earns the name. Everything about it is seamless and intuitive, from finding your ideal bet to claiming a bonus to cashing out.

The bonus for new BetMGM users is a risk-free first bet up to $1,500. Once you place your first bet, wait for it to settle. If you win, you get your payout as normal and the bonus expires. If you lose, you’ll get the amount you wagered back in free bets, which you can then use to place more wagers, (hopefully) win, and cash out.

The bonus is only paid out up to $1,500, so if you wagered $1,500 and lost, you’d get $1,500 back.

Caesars

Caesars is a phenomenal sports betting app with a lot to offer. It often edges out its competitors on one side of any given bet, making it a must-stop sportsbook if you’re shopping for the best odds.

Plus, Caesars has an amazing welcome bonus: a $1,000 risk-free bet.

FanDuel

FanDuel has arguably the best app in the industry. It’s easy on the eyes and super intuitive. Nothing is difficult to accomplish on FanDuel. You can find any sport, place a bet, deposit, or contact customer service in a matter of seconds.

The FanDuel bonus is a Bet $5, Get $200 In Bonus Bets and a NFL Sunday Ticket!

How To Bet On Sports In Tennessee

First, let’s walk through the sign-up process, which will feel very familiar to you if you’ve created an online account for a social media platform, online retailer, or bank.

Creating An Account

  1. Download your preferred sportsbook app or apps. You can get multiple if you choose. You may also wish to use desktop betting, in which case you should visit your sportsbook’s website.
    1. Note: if you use a desktop, be prepared to install a separate geolocation plugin to confirm you’re within Tennessee borders.
  2. Open the app or site and start the registration process. Follow the prompts and provide the info requested. It usually includes the following:
    1. Name
    2. Phone number
    3. Email
    4. Date of birth
    5. Address (does not need to be a TN address)
    6. SSN
    7. Photo ID
  3. Make a deposit once your account is created. If PayPal is an option, we recommend using that as it’s fast, safe, and secure.

Now you’ve got an account all set up and you’re ready to place a bet. If you have trouble with these steps, get in touch with the sportsbook’s customer support channels.

Placing A Bet

Now let’s walk through the steps to place a bet. For our purposes, let’s say we’re betting on the Tennessee Volunteers point spread. Note that this game already occurred, so future odds will be different based on the matchup.

  1. Find the game/match you want to bet on. Because College Football is in season, the games are likely to appear on the homepage, or the CFB category will be at the top of the screen. Find the match in whatever way works best for you, then open up the betting page for it.
  2. Check out the odds and spread. The Tennessee-Ball State matchup lists the following:
    1. Ball State +35.5 (-110)
    2. Tennessee -35.5 (-110)
  3. Select the Tennessee -35.5 option (a huge spread, for what it’s worth) to add it to your betslip.
  4. Head to your betslip and type the amount you’d like to wager. Let’s say $20 for our purposes here.
  5. The sportsbook will tell you how much you’d win if the Volunteers covered the spread: $18.18 (plus your original $20).
  6. Select “place bet.”
  7. Wait for the sportsbook to confirm your bet has been placed.

That’s it! You can repeat the process as much as you’d like, but remember to bet responsibly.

What Sports Teams Can You Bet On In Tennessee?

Great news: you can bet on pretty much any team in Tennessee. IF you’re an expat from another state or a fan of international leagues, TN sports betting sites have you completely covered.

That said, it’s common for bettors in a state to want to bet on their home teams. Here’s a sampling of the Tennessee teams you can bet on at the state’s sportsbooks.

NFL: Tennessee Titans

Football draws more viewers than any other sport in the US, so it’s natural for Tennessee bettors to flock to NFL wagers. The Tennessee Titans are available to bet on at every TN sportsbook.

You’ll find a deep offering of NFL bets at any Tennessee betting platform, including your standard moneyline, point spread, and totals wagers. Additionally, you can find futures, game props, and plenty of player props. Many of these are also eligible for parlays or even same-game parlays.

MLS: Nashville FC

Soccer is incredibly popular with international bettors, and while you can find the big-name global teams on most sportsbooks, some Tennessee bettors might prefer to keep things close to home. Those bettors are in luck, because the MLS’ Nashville FC is available to bet on.

NBA: Memphis Grizzlies

Basketball betting is loads of fun because the sport is chock full of different player performance stats. Of course you can bet on the typical stuff and standard bets, but basketball betting really opens up when you start engaging with player props. You can bet on how many rebounds a player will have, how many three-pointers one will score, or even how many assists one player will log in a game.

Better yet, you can combine these bets into same-game parlays with astronomical odds if you’re feeling spicy.

NHL: Nashville Predators

Hockey is available on all of Tennessee’s sportsbooks. The NHL combines a fast pace of play with a low-scoring game to provide interesting betting opportunities. You can bet on totals or spreads, but the sport is too unpredictable for those bets to be profitable in the long term. Instead, look to player props or even moneyline bets to get in on the hockey betting action.

Tennessee Volunteers & Other College Teams

College Football is a beast of its own, sometimes winning the hearts of fans even over the massive NFL organization.

The Tennessee Volunteers are of course the premier college team in the state, though the Memphis Tigers and other squads are represented at TN sportsbooks as well.

College basketball is also a fan-favorite, especially around March, for obvious reasons.

Tennessee restricts in-play prop bets and individual player props for college sports. Other bets are available on college athletics.

Individual Sports & Global Leagues

Of course, there are sports beyond the major league offerings. Golf, tennis, darts, MMA, and many more are available on Tennessee betting platforms.

Tennessee sportsbooks are safe and legal to use, giving them an edge on illegal counterparts. There are myriad reasons to choose an authorized sportsbook over an offshore or illegal one. Here are just a few.

Supporting Local Businesses

Some of Tennessee’s sportsbooks, such as Action 247 and Wagr, are based in the state. If you use those books, you’re supporting businesses headquartered in the state.

Competition Makes For Better Odds

Sportsbooks in Tennessee want your business, and they compete for it. One way they do so is by trying to outdo one another with better odds. For this reason, you can shop around at multiple legal sportsbooks and often find an advantageous line for your bet at one sportsbook while the others offer a less profitable line.

Safety & Security

Legal sportsbooks must abide by rigorous regulatory standards in order to be allowed to operate in a state. Many of these measures include using encryption to protect user data, paying out wins in a timely manner, and reporting earnings to the state.

At an offshore book, you never know whether your information or data or money is at risk. It's best to steer clear.

Tennessee Mobile Sports Betting

Mobile sports betting tends to be the preferred method for bettors in every legal market. It comes with obvious benefits, such as betting on the go and GPS location tagging that doesn’t require extra steps.

To bet via your mobile device, just download your preferred Tennessee sportsbook app from the Google Play Store or iOS App Store as you would with any other app.
