(3) Illinois vs. (14) Morehead State: Betting Tips, Prediction, and Betting Odds

Illinois is a large favorite in this three vs 11 matchup. The total is also fairly high in this one. Picking Morehead State as the winner in this game would be a bold choice as Illinois has lost just eight games out of 34 so far this season and four of those losses came against ranked teams. They are also extremely hot coming off of a BIG 10 championship.

Morehead State got in because of the automatic bid from winning their conference tournament. They have the exact same record on the season as Illinois at 26-8 but haven’t played nearly as tough of a schedule. In two games against BIG 10 opponents this year they lost by 30 and 23 points but in their third and final game against a BIG 10 opponent they lost by just one to Indiana.

Illinois should make easy work of Morehead State but let’s look at some other bets outside of the moneyline for more value as a bettor in this matchup.

In layup non-conference games this year Illinois took care of business in a big way. Morehead State almost falls into that same layup category. In the seven games that I would consider layups for Illinois, against teams outside of a Power 5 conference, they won every game by 17 or more points, except an 11-point win over Oakland. The spread here is at 11.5 points and it is one that Illinois should cover.

Morehead State is a good team but against better opponents this year most of the games have not been close. They lost by 23 or more in three of their games against Power 5 schools and then lost their only other game against a Power 5 school by just one. Picking an elite BIG 10 school to beat Morehead State by 11.5 seems like a safe bet.

This total is pretty high but Illinois has hit over this in nine of their last 10 games. Morehead State hasn’t been scoring as effectively lately but averaged 75.5 points per game this year. If they can come even close to that the total should smash over.

A game where Illinois scores around 80 to 85 points and Morehead State gets close to 70 seems like an appropriate outcome for this game. Morehead State won’t go down easy as they have now won six games in a row and should have some momentum going into this game. Illinois should have equally as much momentum though as they just won the BIG 10 but have been allowing a good amount of points along the way which bodes well for this over to hit.
