(1) Purdue vs. (5) Gonzaga: Betting Tips, Prediction, and Betting Odds

Both Purdue and Gonzaga are coming into this Sweet 16 tilt following two blowout wins. The Boilermakers dominated Grambling State and Utah State in their first two games seemingly from start to finish. The Bulldogs smacked McNeese in the first game and dominated Kansas in the second half to get to their 9th straight Sweet 16. Who has the upper hand in this clash of the titans?

Purdue is on the warpath after getting bounced by a 16 seed in last year’s tournament. Their offensive strategy is no secret. Get the ball to Zach Edey then let him a) get an easy bucket in the paint, b) get fouled, or c) kick it out for a three point look. It’s hard to argue their success. Edey leads the country in ppg, they are 8th in the country in free throws attempted, and 1st in three point percentage. It is worth noting that Purdue beat the Zags early in the season in the Maui Invitational 73-63.

Gonzaga has played three near perfect halves of basketball in this tournament. They blew out potential darkhorse McNeese in the first round. They trailed Kansas at the half then blitzed the Jayhawks in the second on their way to a 21 point win. Their offense is on fire right now. They shot 50% from the floor vs. McNeese and 60% vs. Kansas. They have also shot a whopping 53% from deep in the R32. The Bulldogs will be out for revenge in this one while looking to get to the Elite Eight.

Gonzaga Point Spread

Gonzaga +5.5 is available at the time of publishing. Playable at that number.

The Bulldogs are far and away the best team Purdue has faced in the tournament. The Boilermakers did win by 10 earlier in the season, but this is a different Gonzaga team than November. Head coach Mark Few made the decision to start Ben Gregg over Dusty Stormer has proven to be very wise. The Zags are 16-2 since Few made the switch. They also have a few big men who are capable of guarding Edey. They can rotate Gregg, Anton Watson, and Graham Ike to guard Edey to ensure nobody gets in serious foul trouble.

Gonzaga’s success from behind the arc could dictate if they win or lose this game. They shot 20% or worse from deep in five of their seven losses. Purdue is good at defending the deep ball, but the Zags are white hot from three right now. They shot 47% vs. McNeese and 53% vs. Kansas. If you’re that hot, it can be difficult for any defense to stop. The Bulldogs are good enough to pull an upset, and they should definitely keep it close if not.

Purdue’s reliance on getting whistles can come back to bite you this deep in the tournament. Back the red hot Bulldogs on the spread in this one.

(1) Purdue vs. (5) Gonzaga Total Points Over 154.5

Over 154.5 Total Points is available at the time of publishing. Playable at that number.

It’s hard not to take the over with teams who can shoot from behind the arc like these two. Purdue is the best in the country at three point percentage, and Gonzaga is 55th. Purdue does struggle to defend in transition and the Bulldogs are 23rd in fastbreak points per game. That should allow the Zags to get out and run. Both offenses should have success in this game. Take the over.
