Heisman Trophy Odds

As Week 1 of college football gets underway it’s time to have a look at the sport’s most prestigious award, the Heisman Trophy. The 2021 Heisman Trophy race was a close one between Alabama quarterback Bryce Young and Ohio State QB CJ Stroud. Young ended up taking the Heisman crown and carrying the Crimson Tide to a National Championship win.

While CJ Stroud was denied a Heisman and a playoff spot last season, oddsmakers have the now-sophomore field-general as the heavy favorite to win the 2022 Heisman Trophy. Below we’ll break down a few of the favorites and dark horses to get you in shape for the upcoming Heisman Trophy race.

CJ Stroud +200

-125 as of 10/21/22

Last season, Ohio State freshman CJ Stroud threw 44 touchdowns, 4,435 yards on 72% completion and only 6 interceptions. While he finished 4th in Heisman voting and the Buckeyes missed out on the College Football Playoff, this season seems different. Several key starters are expected to return to the Ohio State offense and the Buckeyes are second-most favorites to win this year’s National Championship.

While I’d agree with oddsmakers that CJ Stroud is the most likely to win the Heisman Trophy, +200 isn’t quite the value I like for something as unpredictable as the Heisman Trophy. I’d hold off for now and revisit CJ a few weeks into the season to see if his odds get longer.

Bryce Young +400

+2000 as of 10/21/22

What would a Heisman Trophy odds breakdown be without an Alabama quarterback? Bryce Young has the chance to win back-to-back Heisman Trophies this season. 2021 saw the now junior QB put up insane numbers: 47 touchdowns, 4,872 yards on 67% completion and 7 interceptions. The main obstacle holding Bryce Young from the #1 spot is Alabama’s schedule which is noticeably tougher than Ohio State’s.

Caleb Williams +600

Caleb Williams had an impressive 2021 freshman season as an Oklahoma Sooner - winning the starting spot on the Oklahoma roster early on and eventually leading the Sooners to an Alamo Bowl win over powerhouse Oregon.

Williams entered the transfer portal at the beginning of 2022 and one month later decided to transfer to USC along with his former head coach Lincoln Riley. PAC-12 teams beware, Caleb Williams is coming.

Dillon Gabriel +2500

Gabriel is set to replace Caleb Williams’ spot as Oklahoma’s starting quarterback. Dillon Gabriel put up respectable numbers in a 2021 where he only played 3 games. The last time Gabriel played a full season was with UCF in 2020. That season the signal-caller threw for an impressive 3,570 yards, 32 touchdowns and only 4 interceptions. While it’s hard to see anyone outside of the top 3 favorites win the Heisman, +3000 odds make the Sooners’ starting QB worth a look.

DJ Uiagalelei +2500

+2500 as of 10/21/22

Clemson’s starting quarterback is currently tied with Dillon Gabriel for the 6th-most favorite to win this year’s Heisman Trophy. Uiagalelei’s 2021 season was a bit underwhelming. The now junior QB threw for 2,246 yards on 56% completion, 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions; leading the Clemson Tigers to a below-standards 10-3 season.

One of the main reasons I like the value on a DJ Heisman Trophy at +2500 is due to Clemson’s schedule. Clemson opens the season against Georgia Tech, Louisiana Tech, and Furman. These three games should be easy enough for Uiagelelei to start the season with some great numbers. Off the field, it should be noted that Clemson signed the #1 rated QB Cade Klubnik in the last recruiting class. I like the added motivation for DJ Uiagalelei to keep his starting role with Clemson this season.

On most sportsbooks, you can find where to bet on the Heisman Trophy in the college football section under “Heisman” or “Player Futures”.

As these are future bets, they will stay in your active bets all the way until the Heisman Trophy winner is announced. Certain sportsbooks allow you to “cashout” throughout the season if your pick isn’t looking great but many of these offers give you insurance on your bet - making cashing out unnecessary.
