The Portland Trail Blazers will try to stay undefeated on the young season as they host Western Conference rivals the Denver Nuggets tonight at Moda Center. Tip-off is set for 10 pm ET live on NBA TV.
After an embarrassing loss in their first game of the season against the Utah Jazz, the Denver Nuggets have bounced back strong with a pair of wins at Golden State and against the Oklahoma City Thunder. In Saturday’s win over OKC it was a solid team effort with all 5 starters scoring in double figures led by Michael Porter Jr. who had 22 on the night, including 5 threes made. Despite the win though, there are worrying signs about the Nuggets defense as for the 3rd game in a row they’ve given up at least 117 points. That number will have to improve if this team wants to win on the road tonight. In their last 5 games away from home the Nuggets are just 1-4 SU.
The Blazers are undefeated at 3-0 so far this season, a feat not a lot of people thought was possible before the season started. Tonight’s game will be a 2nd game in as many nights after their win at Crypto.com Arena vs the Lakers last night. Damian Lillard once again led the charge with 41 points, it was his 2nd game in a row scoring 40+ points and coming up with some buckets late down the stretch. Portland has now covered the spread in 5 of their last 6 games played in October, however against a Northwest Division team they are 0-9 ATS in their last 9 games. This team is showing great character over the first 3 games of the season, the oddsmakers had them as underdogs in all 3 games and yet they ended up winning every single one of them.
It’s been a hot start for the Blazers so far and I am going to give them the benefit of the doubt in this game, even if the rest advantage is on Denver’s side. The Nuggets defense has been suspect through 3 games so far, until they fix that I am staying away from them. Back the home team and the extra points.
To say that the recent meetings between these two teams have been high scoring would be an understatement. The total has gone over in 8 of the last 10 head-to-head and these 2 teams have combined to score an average of 234.4 points per game during that stretch.
I can definitely see those trends continuing tonight, Denver’s defense has allowed 117, 123 and 123 points through 3 games played and with Damian Lillard being on fire over his last 2 outings he could be in line for yet another high scoring output here. If we look at just games played at Moda Center between the two teams, the total is 9-4 over the last 13 meetings in favor of the over. Let’s back the points in this one.
