Metz vs PSG: Preview, Prediction & Betting Tips

Date: 19/05/24

Kick-off time: 15:00 EST

Venue: Stade Saint-Symphorien
Luis Enrique’s men had already secured the title with three games to go after a Monaco defeat. They have just two games remaining with another fixture to come in midweek before they take on Metz at the weekend. However, despite the cause for celebration, they are still reeling from their Champions League semi-final exit last week. The club have also been in the headlines as Kylian Mbappe announced his impending departure in the summer. Nevertheless, they will be motivated to pick up three points to finish the year on a high. They will end top of the league ahead of Monaco in second and Lille in third, with what is their 12th Ligue 1 title.

Metz, in contrast, have all but been condemned to a relegation play-off. With one game left, they trail Le Havre by three points but are 11 behind in goal difference, a likely insurmountable figure. Therefore, they will be hoping to pick up a result to give them some much-needed momentum heading into their play-off game to stay in the division.

The visitors have struggled lately, as they are winless in their last four games in all competitions. In this stretch, they have scored just four goals, and have also conceded eight, highlighting issues at both ends. Mbappe will play his final league game for the club, and will hope to add to his 26 goals on the season. Metz have conceded at least two goals in six of their last seven, so he should be confident in doing so.

This matchup has been very one-sided, with PSG heavily dominating the head-to-head. They have won 12 games in a row in the league dating back to 2014. They have done this with plenty of success in front of goal, and in defence, scoring 38 and conceding just nine. The reverse fixture earlier this season ended 3-1 to the hosts in Paris. All of the goals came in the second half with Vitinha breaking the deadlock shortly after the restart. The lead was doubled by Mbappe, before Matthieu Udol pulled one back. Mbappe added his second and his side’s third to put the game to bed.

Form Guide

Metz
In their last five games, Metz have won two and lost three. It has been a mixed stretch for Metz as they try to avoid relegation. This run started with two consecutive wins, the first of those being a 2-1 win at home to Lens. The visitors took the lead through Florian Sotoca, who converted from the spot, but Metz were able to turn it around with a brace from Georges Mikautadze just before half-time. They did so with just 29% possession.

They followed this with another narrow win, this time 1-0 away at Le Havre, who sit above them in the table. Once again they were inferior in possession, but took advantage of one of their two shots on target as Mikautadze found the net once more. They were unable to continue this winning momentum as they were defeated 2-1 against Lille. This time they took the lead, with Mikautadze continuing his hot streak from the spot. They were unable to hold on as goals from Ismaily and Yusuf Yazici put the visitors in front before the break.

Another one-goal loss against Rennes occurred, as they were beaten 3-2. Mikautadze put them ahead, but this was cancelled out by Amine Gouiri shortly after. Papa Amadou Diallo netted on the stroke of half-time to restore the lead, before Rennes equalised again from the spot. They then scored a dramatic 93rd minute winner through Arnaud Kalimuendo. Their most recent game was a trip to Strasbourg in which they lost 2-1 late. Mikautadze broke the deadlock in the second half, but goals from Emanuel Emegha and Andrey Santos at the death turned it around.

PSG
In their last five games, PSG have won one, drawn one and lost three. It has been a disappointing stretch for PSG, despite winning the title. Two defeats has seen them crash out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage to Borussia Dortmund. The first leg took place in Germany, and they were defeated 1-0. It was a very even game with both teams attempting a similar number of shots and not much to split them in possession. However, Dortmund took advantage of one of their chances as Niclas Fullkrug netted the winner before half-time.

The second leg ended in the same scoreline, also in the favour of Dortmund. At home, PSG were on top, and saw many of their attempts come off the woodwork. They were just unable to find the back of the net, and once again, Dortmund took advantage of their opportunity. This time it was Mats Hummels who scored, as he netted in the 50th minute. The Germans were able to hold on and advance to the final of the competition for the first time since 2013. PSG returned to league action with a home game against Toulouse in which they lost 3-1. Kylian Mbappe gave them an early lead, but goals from Thijs Dallinga, Yann Gboho and Frank Magri turned it around for the midtable side.

Their European fixtures followed a draw and a loss in the league. They were held to a thrilling 3-3 draw at home to relegation battling Le Havre, a game they had to come from behind in three times, as Bradley Barcola, Achraf Hakimi and Goncalo Ramos all got their names on the scoresheet. Ramos’ equaliser came in the 95th minute. This followed an emphatic 4-1 win at Lorient. A pair of braces from Ousmane Dembele and Mbappe helped them to a dominant lead whilst Mohamed Bamba scored a consolation for the hosts.
