Thursday Night Football returns this week with an AFC East matchup for the second week running. The Buffalo Bills claimed early authority in the division, dismantling the Miami Dolphins last week. This week sees the New England Patriots make the short trip to New York to take on the Jets. Both the Patriots and the Jets will be hoping to move to 2-1 this week and keep touch with the Bills. In the pre-season there was a lot of noise coming out of New England and many expected them to be towards the bottom of the league. Long term head coach Bill Belichick left at the end of last season and the Patriots’ 20 year dynasty became a thing of the past. Many assumed new head coach Jerod Mayo would need time to settle in, however he started impressively with a shock opening win against the highly touted Bengals and then taking the Seattle Seahawks to overtime. Their defense has greatly benefited from second year corner Christian Gonzalez returning to action, after missing over half of his rookie season.

After a disappointing season opener against the San Francisco 49ers, the New York Jets beat the Tennessee Titans. The Jets return back to MetLife for the first time this season with some momentum. Former MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers looked more comfortable in week 2 and will be looking to build on this against the Patriots. Rodgers will most likely be looking to star wide receiver Garrett Wilson for success. If the Jets and Rodgers can generate some offensive momentum, New York’s elite defense should have enough to cope with New England’s offense.

These two teams both sport good defenses, however if Aaron Rodgers can recapture some form, New York have more offensive talent than New England. We expect the Jets to win comfortably and cover the -6.5 spread.

The Los Angeles Chargers head to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers in a matchup between two 2-0 teams. Jim Harbaugh has come in to take the reins in Los Angeles and the Chargers immediately look better for it. Harbaugh teams typically run the ball well and are sure defensively and the Chargers have rushed for 197.5 YPG (2nd), whilst only allowing 6.5 PPG (1st) and 227.5 total YPG (2nd). With electric quarterback Justin Herbert to add to this, we expect the Chargers to have too much for the Steelers, despite their good start.

After losing star quarterback Jordan Love in week 1, the Green Bay Packers immediate success looked more unlikely. However against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday they were able to win a close game relying on their defense and rushing game, which back-up quarterback Malik Willis was able to compliment. One off-season addition Josh Jacobs rushed for 151 yards. Safety off-season addition Xavier McKinney secured his second interception of the season, helping the Packers rack up their fifth interception of the season (NFL high). We expect the Packers, especially their defense, to have enough against the Tennessee Titans.

On Sunday the Dallas Cowboys’ amazing home record came crashing down in a blowout loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Cowboys defense allowed the Saints to score a touchdown on their six opening drives and Dallas’ offense struggled, generating more turnovers than touchdowns. The Cowboys have a chance to make amends this Sunday when the struggling Baltimore Ravens come to AT&T stadium. We expect the Cowboys to bounce back and secure the win.
