Kevin Guasman may prove to be one of the leagues best acquisitions this past offseason. Kevin has started the season with brutal matchups as he’s faced Boston twice, Yankees, Guardians, Rangers, and Astros. Despite that stretch, he is 3-1 with a 2.13 ERA. He’s in the 87th percentile in xOBP, 85th percentile in K%, 99th percentile in walk %, and 88th percentile in whiff %.
He has hit his line in 4 of 6 starts so far this season and 2/3 on the road. He works deep into games and has terrific control which is a rare commodity in baseball these days. He relies on heavily on his 4 seam fastball and disgusting splitter. If you have seen his splitter hop on YouTube and check it out. It’s so nasty it has been outlawed in 37 countries around the world. Alright maybe that last part was a bit of a stretch but his splitter has been a huge part of his success so far this season, especially in the strikeout department.
This evening he gets a beautiful matchup vs the Rays. The Rays offense is solid, but they adore striking out. It’s a hobby of theirs as they are 1st in the league over the last 30 days in strikeout percentage vs right handed pitching. I think we’re getting great value for Kevin in his first great matchup of the season.
