After an ugly defeat in their season opener at Utah, the Denver Nuggets will try to get back on track tonight as they head to Chase Center in what will be a rematch of last year’s 1st Round of the Playoffs.
Denver went into the game vs Utah as 7-point favorites, but ended up losing by 21 points as they allowed the Jazz to shoot over 50% from the field. 2-time MVP Nikola Jokic had his standard 27 points on 12-for-17 shooting, but as a unit the Nuggets shot the ball poorly from three-point land and it cost them the game. Jamal Murray scored 12 points in his first game after returning from injury, his status will be crucial for this team as the season progresses. Denver won’t be lacking any motivation ahead of tonight’s game as they were eliminated by Golden State 4-1 in last year’s playoffs. Winning at Chase Center is a challenge for any team and the Nuggets are no exception as they’ve gone just 4-13 SU in their last 17 visits.
Golden State didn’t have such issues in their first game of the season as they took care of business at home against the Lakers 123-109. Stephen Curry is already in mid-season form as he scored 33 points and dished out 7 assists. Some of those assists went to Andrew Wiggins and Klay Thompson who scored 20 and 18 respectively. Through the first 3 quarters they held LA to just 42% shooting from the field and just 25% from three-point land, a similar effort tonight should get the job done against a much more dangerous Denver team. Golden State has suffered just 1 defeat in their last 15 home games and they are also 6-1 ATS in their last 7 against Western Conference opponents.
Denver did win both regular season games played in the Bay last season, however after a terrible showing in Salt Lake City I’m not sure if they stand a chance tonight. The Warriors already look sharp and they will once again be hard to beat on their home floor. Take Golden State to cover the spread.
Denver’s defense was a no-show in Game 1 against Utah as they committed 21 turnovers on the night and allowed the Jazz to have 7 players in double-figures, 4 of which came in from the bench. That is concerning if you are head coach Mike Malone, but it’s only been one game and there is still plenty of time to work on things.
Head-to-head meetings between these two teams have been high scoring as the over has cashed in 4 of the last 5. We all remember that one game from last season played at Chase Center when Denver won 117-116 on a last second three by Monte Morris, since it’s early in the season I have a feeling we could be in for a similar score tonight. The last 4 of 5 Warrior games vs teams from the Northwest Division have all gone over the total and after their spectacular offensive showing against the Lakers on opening night, the Warriors should score a lot of points in this one as well. Back the over.
