The 22/23 NBA Season is finally here - and it all kicks off with the 76ers taking on Celtics at the TD Garden.
The day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here as the 76ers and Celtics start us off in the 2022-23 NBA season. Philadelphia comes into the season with a ton of expectations after making some really big moves this offseason to boost their depth. They actually beat the Celtics in 2 of the 3 previous meetings, including the last one played at TD Garden. This will be a big test for the 76ers as they look to build on their 4-0 record in the preseason. Adding a veteran like P.J. Tucker will increase their toughness and we all know how good the duo of James Harden and Joel Embiid is when both of them are engaged. It is worth noting that the 76ers have covered the spread in 7 of the last 8 meetings with Boston.
The suspension of head coach Ime Udoka stole all the headlines for Boston this offseason and that is a real shame as this team has added a couple of really interesting pieces to their team. Without losing any major pieces the Cs have added Danilo Gallinari and Malcolm Brogdon to compensate for the things they lacked in that series against the Warriors. Unfortunately for them Gallinari will miss the entire season after injuring himself on international duty, but Brogdon still adds another dimension to them at the point guard position. At just 34-years old new head coach Joe Mazzulla is among the youngest in the NBA and I’m still wondering how the team will adapt to him after such a strong finish to the last regular season under Udoka.
Season openers are never easy to predict, but I have a feeling the 76ers are here to make a statement in the opener against one of their biggest rivals in the East this season. Harden is in the best shape he has been and the hamstring injury is a thing of the past. I’m taking the 76ers to cover the spread at TD Garden on Tuesday.
The total for Tuesday’s season opener has been set at 214 points, a number which has been surpassed only once in the 4 meetings last regular season between these two teams. I don’t think we’ll see a change in approach from either side this year as they’ll both put a ton of emphasis once again on the defensive side of the ball, after all defense is what wins championships.
The total has gone under in 4 of Boston’s last 5 games dating back to last season and if we look at their trends for games played in October we can see that 10 of their last 15 have also gone under the total. Philadelphia is in a similar spot with 8 of their last 11 games overall have gone under the total, including 5 of 6 played on the road at TD Garden. I think following the trends is the way to go here, rust could also play a part after such a long layoff in the offseason. Back the under in this one.
