What is a prop bet in the NFL?

NFL prop bets allow you to create unique, personalized wagers centered around your favorite players. Essentially, you bet on whether a player will accumulate more than a particular statistic – such as rushing yards, yards thrown, and receiving yards. If your prediction comes good, the wager wins.

Here’s an example of a prop bet: Breece Hall to Rush for 70+ yards. If Hall exceeds 70 yards rushing, bets on that selection win.

Types of Player Performance Props

Most of us think of offensive statistics when we think of prop bets – but defensive and special teams-based wagers are just as prevalent.

Here, you’ll catch a quick rundown of the best NFL player prop bets and what they mean.

Touchdowns: The total number of times a player scores 6 points by carrying or catching the ball in the endzone.

Over/Under Yards: Every step taken while in possession of the ball counts as a yard. If a player lands more than the stated number of yards during a game, ‘Over’ bets win. Should the player fail to hit that figure, ‘Under’ picks win.

Receptions: When a receiving player catches the ball and strides toward the opposition endzone.

Rushing: Typically performed by running backs, ‘rushing’ sees the player begin a run from behind the line of scrimmage and toward the opposition endzone.

Passing: When a quarterback successfully throws the ball forward to a teammate.

Sacks: A sack is when a defensive player tackles the opposition quarterback while he is behind the line of scrimmage.

Kicking Points: The cumulative number of points scored by kicking the ball through the goalposts.

Solo Tackles: If an individual defensive player successfully tackles an offensive player alone, it counts as a solo tackle.

Over/Under Prop Bet: Predict whether a player will land ‘Over’ or ‘Under’ a select statistic.

Every instance listed above is linked to a figure set by the sportsbook. Your job is to guess whether the player will land on that figure exactly, exceed it, or fall short of the mark.

Picking Player Props

Some NFL player props are easier to justify because of the sheer volume of stats and information at your disposal. On the flip side, the vague nature of certain markets makes game-wide selections more difficult to get right.
Let’s look at a few factors to consider while evaluating your next player prop.

Recent Form & Performances

This is particularly important as we approach the end of the regular season and beyond. At this point, some players may have racked up impressive rushing, receiving, and throwing yards – but you need to watch out for early season stormers who’ve since fallen off; players who hit top form during the early weeks of the year and dip as the campaign concludes. Check out how players have performed recently, rather than taking the season-long picture at face value before investing in an NFL prop bet.

For instance, a player who lands 100+ receiving yards per game during the first five games will still boast great overall numbers later in the year. However, the form-book will show that a bet on that player does not hold the same value anymore.

Home Advantage Matters

Home-team advantage is a very real thing. With thousands of home fans getting behind their teams every weekend, it’s only natural for certain individuals to perform better at their home stadium than when playing away. For example, the Miami Dolphins tend to shine the brightest while playing in Florida during the early months of the season – so prop bets on passing yards, receptions, and touchdowns at Hard Rock Stadium are more likely to flourish in September and October.

Injury Records

Betting on a player who has been shown to fall victim to poor fitness is always a risk. Heed the warnings presented by the NFL’s official injury list to see who fails to compete regularly. If a sportsbook offers enticing odds on a player who often can’t finish games…you should really look at other options.

It’s worth noting that some players overcome the ‘injury-prone’ tagline to reach their full potential – Matthew Stafford being a recent example.

Use Stats Aggregators

ESPN, PFF, the official NFL website, and Fantasy Football platforms all stand as fantastic options for in-depth and relevant statistics for prop bets. Take mental notes of who’s performed well in niche areas of play – it could work to your advantage during your next wager.
